Universal basic income to be trialled

[for clarity I'm assuming that means the top 1%, not all higher rate taxpayers]
how are the gov going to suddenly be able to get tax from them - when they've struggled with that since forever?

They haven't failed, they haven't even tried. Britain has very low taxes on the wealthiest, and there is zero intrinsic reason for that except the richest people are in power and so won't make changes that impact themselves.

Topping up a wage sounds a better idea but people who don't want to work need some sort of incentive to get them back into work.

Not full UBI it jus won't work IMO.

No, topping up. They are currently inflating tax credits away. Why do we need to subsidise wages in this country.

Another legalised scam that transfers money from the state to the rich, landowners.

Unless they are expecting a significant fall in the number of jobs available i.e its impossible for people to work... something which the pro AI people tell us can never happen and look at the industrial revolution and how the luddites still had jobs then I see no reason for UBI anyway.

Then we just need to leave it the way it is. Paying someone 1600 a month, 19,200 a year for free without having to even look for work will end up a disaster.

People lower than 20K will just stop working and go onto UBI. That's a lot of jobs. :)

There will be. Infact unskilled manual, and hands on jobs are probably the more secure.

Tell the truth 20k is nothing in this country. The money has been inflated away over the past 26 years, 20k is truly a wage = worth 3 months min wage really.

Some people have to get by. You can get a lower end house on 20K as long as you have a deposit and bills are kept low.

You must be a millionaire are you? or one of these people on 100K a year like the rest of the ocuk forum users?

I don't get ubi.

I don't understand how it's able to be funded.

If this amount of money is available from the wealthy why wouldn't our nhs etc all be amazing? If it's viable that is.

I tell you, if I got 1900 a month I'd drop to a part time easy job. I don't care about my career. I work to live. If I could get half my salary through. UBI I'd find a 2 day a week job.

I can't, in my head, understand how it would work. I wonder how many people like me would just basically drop out of the work force.

Sorry but no one this country should be paid that low, when you take into account the cost or the artificially inflated cost of living.

That wage does not reflect the cost v opportunity loss of the individual.

why would stacking shelves only earn you 1k a year?

or.do you misunderstand UBI? You still earn a UBI whether you work or not, so the same motivation is there to earn more, but it gives you the flexibility to pull back from work yo focus on health, family, education or charity work, and removes the risks of loosing jobs and the downward spiral of unemployment. It also puts a big incentive on employers to make the work-life balance acceptable and create a work environment where people are excited to help the employer work towards their vision. It also necessitates a much higher base salary
Precisely this. People misunderstand the concept of universal basic income. I think this will have great potential to increase this county’s lagging productivity as well as filling all the job vacancies that are unfilled. People can choose to work for more money or provision and don’t have to be trapped in the current benefit/working credit situation.

Do you expect businesses just to increase their sale prices by something like 1000% to pay for the increased wages?

A lot of businesses in the UK are just making enough to cover basics, it's why the smaller places are going bust.

A company has to have large income to pay large wages.

To be fair, one of the main arguments for UBI that I can get behind as an accountant is that alongside it you do a very significant simplification of the tax system.
You should be able to ditch a hell of a lot of tax tinkering that has been done, stuff like £1k allowance on interest, multiple income tax bands, etc etc
Merging all income and investment taxation into a simple flat rate, including eg contractors would be far easier to support if the basics of living were already covered and the impact of no allowance and a high rate from the first £1 would not be poverty inducing for the poorest.

Alas as ever I feel governments would not be able to manage this and that we would have many people howling about the high tax rate.

If this was a trial under Labour or the SNP then it would be much easier to attack. As it stands, you're actually being compelled to understand it.

The biggest takeaway for me is that this just highlights the power the right wing press hold in this country - and how selective they are at wielding it.

lmao.

Example - A store has sales of 100k-150K a year on all products. They have 6x staff to cover each month including holidays, sickness etc.

You expect these people to be on 50K a year in wages?

understand the word NEED in that sentence.

I’ll respond, Yes, they should as that is a fair rate, if that allows for a comfortable minimum standard.

Not working is not good for one's physical and mental health. People need something to do in life. Can't see it being a good idea to incentivise not working.

Surely after a while the inflation this would cause would just put everyone back to square one anyway.

Trial is pointless too, give a tiny number of people an extra £1600 a month and see what happens? I can tell you exactly what will happen, those people will step their living standards up a bit and feel more secure in life, for a while.

I'm not intelligent enough to know the answer to this, and while I have seen other successful implementations of UBI, I wonder how it would work in this country.

One of the things we most struggle with is greed - in Britain, we're VERY greed driven, and so I can't help but think that the end result of a national UBI would be that the cost of everything would just go up, much how like during COVID we had an abundance of money in the system, which eventually drove up costs (among other factors).

I do think that we should definitely have the discussion about it though.
