Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

now working
dunno what i did,

i flashed with asus, rebooted, nothing,
flashed with xfx, rebooted, nothing,
flashed with whatever bios came with winflash, rebooted, nothing
figuring i failed i rebooted with bios switch in pos 2, rebooted, 6950 bios as expected

rebooted and switched back to pos 1, with the expectation id have to flash back to stock and return this card, low and behold, the bios had changed to the 6970.. any explanation for this?

Check the shader count using GPU-Z, it should show 1536. Make sure you use version 0.5.0 or newer, the official 0.4.9 version does not support HD 6900 Series properly.

If you see a shader count of 1600, your GPU-Z version is outdated.

i heard 750W was recommended? im no expert tho

i ahve a question.. i have CCC at 900/1400 atm, all good, but temps hit 90ish and i dont like it, so i boosted the fan to 40% and temps are at 80 on 100% load, [i had to use power setting of <10% to get no artefacting]

these numbers ok? metro is running fine on high settings on 2560x1440 with these, cant use very high i fear

is there any issue for running these fans high for long periods of time? the noise is fine as i use headphones with games

From a quick read it seems there are 6950 BIOSes with shaders and what not and full 6970 BIOSes...but I would have no idea knowing which is which.

So can someone tell me, which one is it in the batch files techpowerup made for noobs like me?

Bit worried if full 6970 BIOSes are causing failures.

Just did my HIS 6950 with the 'ready made' batch ones for noobs as I mentioned.

Edit: to be a bit clearer, I used these: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1920/HD_6950_to_HD_6970_Flashing_Tools.html

Don't think the unlocked 6950 bios is in that, think its just standard 6970 bioses. If you look in GPU-Z your stock clocks will be 880 1375 on a 6970 bios at 1.175v whereas if you flashed an unlocked 6950 bios they would still be at 800 1250 at 1.1v

Hmm, seems I have 6970 BIOS then with 880/1375 default clocks.

So if you download the easy DIY .bat files and only want the shaders unlocked you pick up the file from the media fire link, rename it to unlock.bin and replace the current unlock.bin in the winflash folder and run the bat file?

If I add a second 6950 can I flash it with the already flashed card installed as or do I have to remove the original and flash seperately?

returned my cards
(2 6950s) i decided that the 5850s would do be fine for now, just seemed silly to get 2 high powered cards for nothing demanding at the moment.

loved them though they are amazingly powerful.

i am tempted to get a 2nd and flash it while i can

c/fire is better with this gen isn't it? wondering how crysis scales?

I was thinking about this too when i built my pc but in the end decided against it, due to the fact i would need to upgrade my psu (only a 620W) and then another waterblock, turns into a £400 upgrade. I figure that if the time comes when i want / need another, il either buy a 6970 or just buy the next card that comes out.

Unless I'm missing something ( first time oc of a gfx card ) all I seem to be able to get is stock 6870 clocks in ccc with +15% power applied, the crysis benchmarks just crash with much more :\

Just bad luck?
