Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

How can you over volt the GPU guys ?

I have already flashed to the 6970 Bios im set at 880/1375 and would like to push these a bit higher if possible but cant do it with regular overclock as it just crashes on me. I have my power up to 20% in CCC is there anything more i can do ?

Any help would be appreciated.

I used beta afterburner where you have to change the .cfg to enable overclocking, sure I read it about here somewhere.

Finally got my 6950 under water gone from 90C to 40C Max under load, im now feel confident to over clock so im running at 900/1300 6950@6970 with stock 6950 voltage.

With it on water you shouold be able to hit some pretty high clocks. I managed to get mine up to 1010/1535 for a successful Unigine bench, now running at 960/1520 on stock 6970 volts for my 24/7 use. Card's never been over 52C since putting it on water and it was hitting 90 under load with the stock cooler as yours was. (Hell of a lot quieter too!)

Is it easy to fit the 6970 block onto a 6950?

As easy as fitting any GPU block tbh..(so a bit of a pain :)) i got the EK block so it has 6970 written on the side

didn't bother with the back plate i wanted a cool/quiet card didn't need the bling.

Damn some high overclocks then one water!

have mine at 920/1450 currently and temps are around 85-90c underload!

Any option for better cooling without water?

I'm thinking of getting that 6950 on special today but wondering if that bios flash is safe after reading previous posts here

what is there to worry about exactly
i think everyone on here who has flashed the 6950 has flashed ok

There have been rumors/posts floating the internet about damage caused by flashing a 6970 bios. Pretty sure that most people who have only done the unlock mod (basically unlocks and reflashes your original bios with extra shaders) have had no issues. Better off doing the latter for peace of mind as you can always bump it to 6970 clocks anyway

Just spent the last couple of hours fiddling with my graphics card. (HIS 6950)
Using the 11.2 driver I benched my 6950 @ 880/1325 against the very same card unlocked to a 6970 @ stock speeds i.e. 880/1375. My benchmarks of choice were Dirt 2 Benchmark, 3DMark 11, FFXIV Benchmark @ High, Heaven 2.1 and Crysis Benchmark. What I found is that I would on average get 1 fps or 1% more in terms of score with the latter, thus making the unlocking a bit pointless. Make whatever you want of this.

Resolution?

You said in a later post this is 1080p, what are your other system specs? Could you possibly be cpu bottlenecked? Even if it is just 1fps better, you might as well unlock because you can and lose nothing by doing so

i see a 5fps~ increase from a 6950 880/1375 to a 6950 unlocked 880/1375.

Power Control settings sat at +20% at all times.
Yes, it would seem that there is only a 1-2% increase with the added shaders at same clock speeds, which one can barely notice. As a matter of fact I was under the impression that unlocking actually gave me less performance than my overclocked 6950 until I took the time to put it through some tests.

These are the results I got:
A) stands for 6950 @ 880/1325
B) stands for 6950 @ 6970 stock

Dirt 2 Benchmark
A) Min Fps: 44.5
Max FPS: 49.5
Score: 4560
B) Min Fps: 43.9
Max FPS: 50.9
Score: 4766

3DMark 11
A) P4562
B) 4620

FFXIV Benchmark
A) 3398
B) 3474

Heaven 2.1 cold run
A) 1039
FPS: 41.2
Min FPS 17.8
Max FPS 80.1
B) 1064
FPS 42.3
Min FPS 18.1
Max FPS 82.4

Crysis Benchmark
A) Min FPS 26.34
Max FPS 40.50
Average FPS 33
B) Min FPS 25.69
Max FPS 41.80
Average FPS 36.5

These were all conducted at 1080p with the exception of 3DMark 11.
