Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

my 5850 crossfire lasted me 3 months then i got the side step bug :)

ditched them out, picked up a 6950 XFX on the weekend deal.

Straight flash with the 6970 bios, oc'd with MSI after burner currently stable @ 900/1400

i dont bother tracking fps in games i just play them :), but vantage score for my 6950 is now 21k, my xfire 5850 were 24k, so it's not far behind but has the advantage of being a single card and eye infinity performance feels much smoother with the 2GB of ram.

should keep me happy for another 3 months :D

Try dropping the ram to 1375MHz and see if bench scores go up. They do in heaven bench with my card :) 1375 to 1500 gave a drop in score but 1525 gave an increase...wasnt comfortable with it that high though

wow thats fast. I got the 2 gig MSI also using unlocked shaders - one weird thing it was underclocked when I installed it ? at 755 mhz?

can someone explain the 6970 bios memory voltage damaging this card compared to raising the voltage of the GPU to 1.17v? when only unlocking shaders?

Is it simply two diff voltages, and they are hard coded in a 6970 bios?

However I have the dreaded sound loop on punkbuster servers in BC2 now. - didnt affect my 4870. and I am NOT using anything but CCC. Read its only affecting 5xxx and 6xxx ati cards. - still fine on non PB servers. I run the game at medium DX10 with no AA and it runs FAST in 1680x1050. Why? because I played CS for 11 years and anything less than 100 fps I can FEEEEL

Read something about it being due to different memory timings with 6970 bios but not sure about that.
Possibly also not all ram can do 1375 so that alone would cause problems.

edit: ^^ Know what you mean mate. I play bops on the same setting as i had with my 8800gts a few weeks ago. Used to run at 60-70fps then but now runs at 140-200+ and the difference is amazing. Just feels so much more responsive and my game has improved significantly.

Downside is i get accused of hacking now :(

Thanks for the info everyone. I've now unlocked my MSI 6950 with no problems observed so far. Ran some benchmarks, played some Crysis. No artifacting spotted and seems to run well. :D

Flashed mine to a 6970, started artifacting, then I flashed it back. Then I modded the BIOS instead and everything now runs fine :) Apart from a really weird OC limit, core can be set to 939 and be furmark proof for an hour but 940 means instant freeze..... This is most irregular!

Received my Sapphire 6950 from OcUK on Saturday, flashed my 6950 bios using the modding script (post 381) from this thread and it worked like a charm. The card is a great overclocker, I have it stable at 6970 clocks atm and max load temp so far is 60c, I'm love this card :D

Have you had to increase the voltage yet?

Most will do quite a bit more than 6970 speeds :)

Had one of mine benching at 1000/1375MHz

No it's still at stock volts 1.1, I was just going to let it sit there for a while just to test, maybe at the weekend I will try to find the max core and then drop it back down a little. even at 6970 clocks it's quite a nice bonus though.

Bit stuck folks. Flashed my XFX to the 6970 bios using the batch file method.
Thing is, tried running 3dmark vantage and after the first test it crashes out. Temperature of the card is around 75C when loaded.
Running at 880/1350.
Any thoughts please?
