Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

Erm got them recently in a prebuilt system from overclockers, 2 XFX ones, will try and find out.

edit: seems they are, so download that and just run it?

Ok have run it, nothing happened though?

There's more to it than simply executing run.bat.

You have to use GPUz to read off your original bios into a file first.

Save the file as original.bin in the same folder where you see run.bat

Once you done that then you should execute run.bat.

That will produce modded.bin in the same folder. That is the file you then manually have to flash to your card.

Why W1zzard hasn't come up with the appropriate batch files to automate the flashing of this part (just like he did for the original 6950 to 6970 one) I don't know. As such, you have no choice but to get dirty and learn the few simple commands to flash modded.bin to your 6950.

Have no problem learning some commands at all :) Thanks for the instructions. Ok so i will do as you instructed, what are the commands to flash? Same as OP?

Think i got it, For dual cards should i remove one, flash it, then replace and do the other?

edit: after doing more reading im still not sure, the original post is for using a 6970 bios not just unlocking, sorry for stupid questions just i really dont want to mess the cards up.

Yep, same as in first post...

Type "atiwinflash -unlockrom 0" <-- the 0 means first adapter, if you have multiple cards, physically uninstall all but the one you want to flash
- Type "atiwinflash -f -p 0 modded.bin"

You do not have to remove any cards or do any swapping. Simply replace the 0 with a 1 and it will work on the second card.

So to summarise. You run both commands once with the 0 to flash the first card then you run the same two commands again but with 1 instead.

You'll have to make sure you copy your modded.bin into the folder where atiwinflash.exe is (along with all the other files as it needs those in order to run).

personally a great find but I think the gains are so small the same reason why theres such a small price difference between the 6950's and 6970's that I wouldn't even bother with it, I get the whole its a free little boost but on the long run since the cards have only been out for a short while we don't know what will happen to the cards and I personally think the shaders were locked for a reason otherwise they would have just sold them as a 6970.

Probably me just being paranoid, can't blame anyone for that when spending the money it costs I was thinking about it until I saw a thread about someone's flashing failed and it would error out when trying to put his backed up bios on and the factory one wouldn't unlock so it was fooked and when that happens RMA = no chance.

Flashed card with bat script from techpower-up
moved power control slider to 20% in CCC
ran fur mark on max at full screen for 20 minuets
Every thing runs fine.

That's all that need to be done ?

Hi,
I've Justed ordered my 6950 the one what is on sale at the mo.
I want to flash it to 6970, what I want to know can I damage my card or anything like that I should be worried about?. Say if it went wrong could I return it?.

is unlocking the shaders just a software thing, or is it actually changing the hardware, what im asking is how do i get it back to normal for possibly sending them back or selling because i hate ati's drivers so much.

You can flash it back yes it just a bios
What wrong with your drivers, did you use driver sweeper?

Thanks how do you flash it back?

If you look at my post where I helped you on the weekend...

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18763093&postcount=1145

...you will see that I referred to original.bin

Use the same commands I referred to later on flash both the cards and replace modded.bin with original.bin in the command line.

It really is as simple as that. Here, I'll even cut'n'paste with the changes for you...

atiwinflash -unlockrom 0
atiwinflash -f -p 0 original.bin

atiwinflash -unlockrom 1
atiwinflash -f -p 1 original.bin

Just remember that you need to be "in" the same folder where atiwinflash.exe is located in order to avoid the "'atiwinflash.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." message coming up.
