Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

I use furmark to see how temps go on chip and to melt down thermal compound tbh.
Whats the use of having stable Furmark when you cant play games on those settings. I for once do play games not only benchmark my pc :D.
When im gaming bf3 on 860/1300 settings at 1080p high settings on 3d card goes to 55c max. I get around 13xxmb vram usage. Interesting thing is that at 720p with AA ultra ect in 2d mode it is stable at 950/1350 no problems thats with around 15xxmb ram usage.
I tried with locked shaders same resoult.
Its not rl about having it ocd that high. Its just im bored and i like to play with stuff even if i end up bricking it. Besides that if/when prices of 7950s drop i will get one anyway. I need more power for 3d gaming heh.

I've done a fair bit of PC overclocking (in BIOS) but never really fiddled about with the Graphics card (other than overclocking in CCC). Here's a GPUz screenie for my card, can someone with more knowledge than me in this area please have a quick look & advise:

a) Is it possible to unlock the shaders on this card?

b) What sort of gains am I likely to get?

c) Is it worth doing?

I recently updated the drivers & have seen a marked FPS improvement in BF3, so much so I now have everything at ultra minus a couple of things tweaked back so am happy with the current performance. But if I can get a marked improvement for nowt, I'll do it!

Cheers

I flashed my 6950 a while back, but am having problems with the display ports. Only one DVI seems to work instantaneously, and the HDMI gives no response. Is this a firmware issue? Have I done something to the card when flashing it? or is it a driver issue?

I have updated drivers several times but that have solved nothing.

If you have any advice I would be truely greatful

Thanks

I foolishly never tested it before flashing, it has performed fine/very well from the working DVI port but no response from the other display ports, the HDMI and second DVI (minus the DP port which I have not checked due to incompatibility with monitor).

I have tried to dual monitor but have had no success due to the above reason.

I forced flashed it, if that suggests anything?

edit: will switching the dual bios switch to the alternative bios revert my flash to the default bios, for me to test if the ports work???

Flicking the switch back will revert to the original BIOS yes.

If it's still broken, then flick back to the 6970 BIOS, restore the original and RMA it.

I can't unlock my twin frozr 3, The flash seems to go fine with both the modified bios and the "so called" msi bios but the shaders only show as 1408

Any ideas?

Not all the cards are unlockable, they started laser cutting the chips so they say, only one of mine unlocked (with the MSI bios), odd tho because the one that unlocked was bought 4 months ago, and the one that didnt i got from the MM, but it was older.

I bought mine from Ocuk new on the 2nd of June last year, I thought that any from then were unlockable, but I might have just got in too late

Anyone had any problems with these unlocked cards and the Gigabyte Z77 motherboards?

I bought a GA-Z77-D3H last month and i have had to use the default bios in order to get an image. My friend who has the same board and card has exactly the same problem. The PC boots but i get no image on screen at all when the unlocked bios is enabled.

I contacted Gigabyte about the problem and they responded with "Does MSI allow user to flash 6950 card to become 6970 card? Please check with MSI." I have emailed MSI about it too.

I have the latest bios for the motherboard and all i can presume is that Gigabyte haven't added support for the custom unlocked bios.

The hardware is identical apart from some power circuitry which is irrelevant to motherboard compatibility. At this point I'd probably email them under a fake name and tell them you have a (whatever specific model you flashed it to) and it doesn't display an image, but you have tried it on another board and it's fine, also a friend's 6950 is fine on this board.

You could also try flashing to a different 6970 BIOS, such as the sapphire one?
