Why are you getting winter tyres ?

Because she wants some as her commute is along untreated roads. Unneccesary in my opinion, I wouldn't bother and my views on winter tyres are well known. But her money, her choice, and if she's going to do it then it might as well be done properly, hence some OEM 15 inch wheels and a set of the best tyres I can find (cost seems to be a non issue as pretty much every tyre in this size is well under £80 a corner).

Going from 205 to 175 is going to have considerably less grip in any condition apart from deep snow though, I'm not convinced at all.

Hence my intial preference for 195 but to be honest it's a 120bhp Mini, it's not on 205's for any reason other than the fact it has stupid sized wheels on it in order to look good. The standard Cooper has the 175's.

I remain entirely sceptical about the value of winter tyres as you well know. It'll be an interesting experiment, mind :p

TS810 looks pretty poor though whereas TS850 seems to be the best tyre on the market - 1st in all 7 tyre tests.
TS810s are old but still excellent winter tyres. (think CS2)
I had them on my Leon and they were brilliant.

You can't go wrong with any of the ContiWinterContact TS range really.

I think I would favour Goodyear Ultragrip 8 over anything other than TS850. The trouble is that TS850 looks so absolutely excellent it'd be a shame not to be able to get it. Looking at various results it looks like one of the first winter tyres that isn't noticeably poorer than a proper tyre in normal winter weather, which I find appealing.

I doubt your girlfriend will be trying to break records at the nurburgring.

Honestly, I'd go with a tyre in the proper size.
Unless you buy something Chinese, the majority of big-brand winter tyres are excellent.

Think you may have misunderstood whatever you read, 175s on a rim meant for 215 would just not work ( I'd be amazed if this is the case). It probably can come with a different wheel which has a 175 section

Whats the deal with tyre width?

I've got 205/40/17's on my Fabia VRS (2011 Estate, the "new" petrol one) and I know the tyres are more narrow than on the Seat/VW/Audi offerings with the same engine and gearbox.

Can you chose to go for slightly wider tyres, or is it an absolute no no?

I've seen that the Goodyear Eagle AS2's are available in the normal size, so I'll probably just go for them regardless, but just curious. Would be nice to cope with FWD power delivery fail.

You could, but you'd need to reduce the profile to keep the rolling radius the same.

Though I'm struggling to see what difference you expect it to make? I very much doubt the Skoda Fabia is under-tyred on 205 section tyres.
