**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Why does any of that matter anyway? We don't live in Germany or have the same climate or landscape.

Because somebody said that there no proof that winter tyres do anything and it was all a scam. So I said if that was the case why do some countries make the compulsory?

Then you went nit picking:P

I've said it before and I'll say it again... winter tyres aren't just good at cold conditions so I don't know why so many people focus on that fact. Whilst relevant it's certainly not the be all and end all!

I got mine for driving locally in the lake district (shock horror) and have found that the frequently wet and leaf littered roads are far better tamed by winter tyres.

Did you previously use rubbish tyres or something?

Nope, driven a variety of tyres including continental, goodyear, dunlop, michelin (think I had vredestein once too! :D) and from performance to ditchfinder level and never seen such a marked improvement in any tyre. Not only that but the traction shift from dry to wet is nowhere near as pronounced as on any of the other tyres I've used.

Right. Technical question time.

Trying to pick a tyre size for a 5.5 inch wide 15 inch wheel. The OEM size is 175/65/15.

But this size is:

a) Rubbish in terms of tyre availability and my choice of tyre is not apparenetly available in this size
b) 1.27% smaller in rolling radius from the existing factory fit 205/45/17.

Instead, I am considering 195/60/15. This tyre size is:

a) Excellent in terms of tyre availability
b) Just 0.21% smaller in rolling radius from the cars existing tyre/wheel size.

Presumably I can therefore safely fit the 195 section tyres but I'm a bit worried about the rim width - it's not going to look silly and distorted, is it?

I'm really not sure why the manufacturer picked 175/65 given it's so different to the larger wheel sizes offered in terms of rolling radius compared with 195/60.

195 on a 5.5 would be pushing it a little I think. For reference, this is a 195/50 on a 7J wheel.

How about 185/60? You can get Continental Premium Contacts in that size and a bit of Googling seems to suggest it won't be an issue.

Edit: Didn't see the posts above, took too long to reply.
