**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

I have now just realised that my partners Mini having run flats is why its not as enjoyable as it should be... I didn't even think about that.

The transformation is amazing - the winter wheels are 15's with non RFT's. It rides and handles brilliantly. It's great on the smaller wheels.

Fox - you got Blizzaks on the Mini? What do you think of them in non-wintry conditions?
I think they're **** but perhaps that's because of the barge that is the A6.

Nope, it has Goodyear Ultragrip 8's. They actually drive very well - infact you don't really notice it has winters. To be fair though it's a 1.6 Cooper and is never driven hard or at the limits of grip and it doesn't really have enough power to break traction in normal driving.

By contrast I rented a 320d with Blizzaks on it in Germany at the beginning of the year and they very much made their presence known - a rumbly drone at low speeds...

Just purchased 4x Uniroyal Rainsport 3's.

Tyreleader have them at £58.99 each in 225/40/18 which is a bargain. Heck, they were a bargain before at £64 a corner.

I find tyre pressure to be critical to the noise of the PSS, try adding 1 psi or so extra and see if it makes any difference.
I'll remember this in the spring, thanks :)
I'm guessing tyre pressures at the moment anyway as I purchased XLs and they're not on the list in the door sill..

Wish I'd had them on up to Denmark now. 15C and my car looks like **** with the blizzaks. Handles like **** as well.

My current SportContact2s reached the end of their useful life recently, potential to be doing a few more miles in my car soon so decided to go with Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance to replace them, in preference to the high wearing / high resistance CSC2s or Dunlop SportMaxx instead.

Only had them a day and already amazed by the difference in noise, sooooo much quieter than the CSC2s.

Not expecting the grip levels to match up but then again, whilst an 'Efficient' tyre, they're also several years newer in design than the CSC2 so it may not be as pronounced as I think it will.

Intrigued as to whether i'll notice a difference in economy too, on a long trip the car will generally return 38/39 in normal driving, would be nice if the tyres can tip it to 40/41 :p

I would imagine you will hit 40mpg, they have a very low rolling resistance - best in class IIRC. Grip is good, but the soft sidewalls don't give much confidence.

Why were you only considering the CSC2s? What about CSC5 or the new 6?

They're quite a jump up in performance / road noise / wear rate from the 2s...

CSC5 is available from 17" up... but then I suppose that Golf could be 16"... just 17-19 seems quite popular on Golfs for the last few years?

17" upwards were not very common on 14 year old Golfs :p I think it was only the 4Motion, R32 and Anniversary GTI that came with 17 or 18.

16" on the GTI that I have, 205/55R16, so CSC2 was the newest of the Sport Contact series. Premium Contact 5 was an option but read negative things about high wear and their review performance seemed hot and cold.

If CSC5 or even 3 were an option, I'd have seriously considered those.

Fair enough, thought it was a bit newer than that from your sig pic... but then my knowledge of Golf appearance by MY isn't all that up-to-scratch ;)

I'd have probably made a similar choice then, yes... the PC5 have a high wear rate, possibly higher than the CS2s you wanted an improvement from.

Which of these winter tyres would you go for?

and for the mrs car...

More limited option just using Black circles as a starting point..
