Updates for Mac Pro!

single chip option?? Hold the phone!

Single chip might be a VERY interesting build. If i can get the single chip box for £1200, say - it'll be a good spec. Add in 3 500GB drives of my own and dual screens for another £400 and we might have a deal!

Can anybody give me an example of the need for 8 cores!?!? LOL

Actually a 2.8 Penryn Quad, 2GB, 320GB HD for about £1200 isn't bad, really - considering its Apple here. A similar box from Dell would be about the same, custom built about £800-900 without the OS (+£100). Leopard is worth more than £100 to me!

my options

base spec 2.8Quad mac pro (with wireless) for £1,459

imac 24" 2.8Extremem for £1,459

That is a helpful comparison for me when I am trying to narrow down my options! Both have the same gfx card, imac has larger hard drive - thats about the only differences aside from processor specs!

I would pay the extra £200 just for the Apple build quality. My Powermac is like 4 years old and nothing has gone wrong with it, so much so I can't justify selling it for a Mac Pro even though I really really want one!

lol

I'm now thinking:

single chip 2.8 quad
up the gfx to 8800GT 512mb so i can play games in XP/bootcamp (its only another £130 - you couldn't buy one for that)
buy one screen now and save up for the second screen (get about september)
buy 2 500GB drives for space.

what is the 2600XT like at playing games on a 20" screen? Call of Duty specifically.

OR.....

what about picking up a dual chip 2.00 from somewhere like Cancom (trusted apple retailer) when the prices crash (well, fall a bit say) - still a good machine, maybe pick one up for £1100?

Get three more hard drives :) I would use the main one for OS X, a 500Gb for movies and storage, 500Gb for TimeMachine then get a smaller 160Gb or something for Windows and games. Man I want one now!

The imac doesn't have the same graphics card, it comes with the 2600 PRO and the mac pro comes with the XT version as standard, which is faster.

Only other thing i can think of is the obvious upgradability of the mac pro

Ah right cheers for that - i thought they were the same! Wonder what the mac pro be like for gaming?

God i forgot about time machine!

Looks like it'll be:

320GB for the OS, split into 250GB for OSX and 70GB for WindowsXP/Games
500GB for Files
250GB work slave
250GB for Time Machine (can you select time machine to only back up key files? I really don't want *everything* to be on my hard drive for ever, thats the point of 'deleting' isn't it??)

*sigh* more £££

Should be pretty good tbh in bootcamp with the 2600xt - http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/465/10 and even OSX gaming has now made some leeway though your have to wait a bit to see benchmarks

The 8800gt will be far faster card and if you game would be worth the upgrade cost - http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/Nvidia_GeForce_8800_GT_Review/5369-7.html

I know both reviews are for windows systems, but under boot-camp they would perform the same as their windows counterparts

if i was definitely sure they would perform as good as their windows counterparts then i think i could be sold for sticking an 8800 in a mac pro.

Hey guys, do you think that since these new Mac Pros support the 8800GT... it'll be possible to stick a 8-series GTX or Ultra in there? I know it's too early to tell but... I think that'd be pretty cool.

That base spec isn't bad for the price. Its still bloody expensive but sneaks in at the top end of what I'd pay for a computer.

Does anyone else think this is a good sign for MacWorld? To do this with minimal fanfare beforehand surely means they have something really cool to show off.

I think you'll be in the same boat as any other card. It will work in Windows but you'll probably encounter driver weirdness in OSX. If it works at all.

i've worked out a new mac pro, single chip, 2GB, 8800GT and with additional 250GB and 500GB drives and a single 20" samsung monitor will cost me £1450 ex VAT (buying through a business so get VAT back)

do you think this is a good buy?

I worked out a Q6600, 4GB, 1TB (split across drives), 8800GT with dual screens and Vista would cost me about £1200

The main thing i have to think about is is the leopard OS and the presitge/build quality of an Apple system worth £250??
