Updates for Mac Pro!

Aye, 3-5weeks but im not making the mistake of getting the basic spec GFX card like i did last time... Makes me wonder, how long until these cards will be released as upgrades for us Old Macpro owners.

Those of you looking to buy a Single chip Mac Pro and then dropping in your own secondary CPU might be out of luck.

The last time Apple offered this they pretty much KIA'd the secondary CPU socket, just to stop this exact thing happening.

Perhaps they won't this time, it'd be stupid if they don't though.. they want to sell the more expensive ones ;)

I'd have this:

* Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
* 2GB (2x1GB)
* NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3
* 320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
* Two 16x SuperDrives
* AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
* Apple Mighty Mouse
* Apple Keyboard & Mac OS
* Apple Cinema HD Display (23" flat panel)

* Five USB ports
* Two FireWire 400 ports
* Two FireWire 800 port

..then upgrade the RAM and HDD's myself.. then cry.. :)

if thats ready in 8 days, why does it take another 2-4 weeks for some blue cheese fat ass to open the box and put one in as a BTO upgrade??????

Man these look good. There's no way on earth I can justify it as I use my MacBook Pro on my lap in front of the TV most of the time... but if I had the spare cash :D

Instead i'll try and bully my Dad into getting one instead of a new PC

When are you in the Mac mag's next then Darryn? ;)

..what with 2 Mac Pros

tbh that was just the update i was waiting for - confirms that i shall now be returning to windows and building myself a quad core beast. I almost fell out of my chair when i saw the prices of the new MP.

Oh and 2600XT - you spoil us apple you really do

Your joking? The Mac Pro is the cheapest workstation with these specs out of any PC manufacturer. The idea that Apple makes expensive hardware is a myth nowadays in the professional market.

The 8800GT is available seperatly now.

Well, I think dell might be able to do better on the base model but thats hardly the point, the mac pro's are fantastic value for the specification. Sure you can build something with core 2 quad for cheaper but it'd be nowhere near in performance terms.

Was looking into this and it seems that
''The Service Source document for the Mac pro ( early 2008 ) only lists two logic board part numbers 2.8/3.0 GHz (661-4449) and 3.2 GHz (661-4676), so best guess is the single processor CAN be upgraded by adding a second processor and heat sink.

The new machines appear to use a board revision nearly identical to the 8 core with the exception of using the 5400X chip set and a revised northbridge heat sink/cooler in place of the 5000X chipset and heat sink.''

Which could mean in theory that you could

(sorry mods if i cant post this link for whatever reason)

From what I have read you should be able to stick the new Harpertown Xeons in the old Mac Pro. You won't get 800Mhz RAM or 1600Mhz FSB but it is not going to be that much difference in speed.

If you already have a series 1 MP the only real reason to upgrade would be the graphics card. But that is available seperatly anyway.

Ah right, I did read something along those lines.. except it was closed off in the old G5's

The dodge is finding a heatsink for the added CPU.

If that's confirmed then it'd be a nice way to upgrade down the road, assuming you could source the parts :D

Shouldn't be too hard i don't think, be interesting to know if the heat-sink mounting is unique if if its the same as all socket 771

I've no idea not having one myself yet but I'd be very surprised if it wasn't a special fitting, the mac pro owes more to server design internally than to workstations and all the server xeon heat-sinks (even the ones that aren't 1U) are proprietary

Perhaps you could source a heatsink from a broken MP on ebay.

Assuming it's the same design as the previous MP :)

I guess time will tell when the yanks start opening their ups.. after all, they're already in stock in the Apple stores out there.
