Upgrade from 5600X to i7-12700K

Currently running a 3070-TI with 32gb of 3600Memory, and a 5600x cpu

I'm thinking of staying with DDR4 however upgrading my B550 motherboard to Z690 mobo and i7-12700K.

So my question is would I see much improvement in gaming over my current setup? Also is DDR5 much improvement over DDR4?

Thanks

I would personally build a Zen 4 system if going with DDR5, as you will be able to keep using this motherboard for years and have drop in upgrades. CPUs like the 7800X3D (with v-cache) will also be an option.

DDR5 shows (a bit) of improvement over decent DDR4 modules in games with modules rated for DDR5 6000 (or above). Some games can show a significant improvement in performance at higher framerates (60 FPS +), with high frequency DDR5 modules.

DDR5 latency will improve as the memory controllers in Zen 4 / Intel CPUs improve. There will probably be more information above these details soon.

I would wait, the announcement is imminent for Zen 4. The 6xx series will soon be replaced by 7xx boards on the Intel side as well.

What type of games do you play and at what resolution? The consensus right now is that at higher resolutions performance is graphics card limited anyway. But processor wise most games use 6 cores, a small number benefit from 8+. Newer processors will have single core performance improvements, but I'm not sure how much you'd get over a 2 year old processor.

As others have mentioned, a discounted 5800X3D would be a good swap, but if you’re going as far as swapping motherboards, the new chips are right around the corner.

Unless you’re playing at a competitive level and can’t wait, I’d wait.

I concur with sticking with what you have, the 5600X is still very capable. If you really want an upgrade the 5800X3D will provide a significant boost in some scenarios (particularly for minimum FPS) but if you're looking to swap the whole lot it's certainly worth waiting to see what Zen 4 and Intel's next bring.

If the 5800X3D is anything to go by the 7800X3D (or whatever model they decide to use 3D v-cache with) will be a monster gaming chip (assuming the rumours are true, and if it's due at the end of the year/early next).

5800X3D or wait.
This.
No point in moving to intel. I would either get a 5700x 5800x or the 3D
I wouldn't bother with 5700x or 5800x. The performance gains in gaming will be minimal. Either get the 5800X3D and keep the rest of your kit (it'll be fast than a 12700K in most games anyway). Or wait for Zen4 and new Intel chips.

On another note, unless you've just got an itch to upgrade, you're probably fine with sticking with what you've got. Your setup should be absolutely plenty for 1440p gaming. What sort of improvements are you even hoping to see? It could be completely pointless changing from what you already have.

The 2 cores will definitely help in a lot of games. So still worth it.

Cores are less important than IPC, clock speed and cache. 6 cores and above are plenty. Going from a 5600X to a 5800X for 1440p gaming will net you up to a 0-3% performance improvement in games. Hardly worth the money. However, going from a 5600X to a 5800X3D will net you up to a 20% improvement, even at 1440p. This is due to the cache increase. 5600x has the same amount of cache as a 5800x.

Definitely made them numbers up from 6-8.

But yeah, whatever.
