Upgrade path from Rift S

I just don't like the detethered graphics reduction

Since you have a Quest 2 already, why don't you try the following.

When you connect it to your computer, what resolution and refresh rate do you set in the Oculus app?

Have you changed the Encode bitrate in the Oculus Debug tool?

Depending on what you set those to, it makes a massive difference to the visual quality of PCVR games.

As for comfort, I presume you are using the stock strap? The problem with the stock strap and the basic Elite strap, is that the headsets slips down on your face because the weight is all at the front. What people then do is tighten the side straps as much as possible to stop the headset sliding down. This gets very uncomfortable, and sometimes painful. after a while. The trick is to get the top strap right, so that it's holding all the weight and tighten the side straps just enough to hold the headset in place. However, this doesn't work for a lot of people. So, the easiest thing is to attach a counterweight to the back to the strap. Something around 200g, like a power bank or battery or a phone. This stops the headset sliding forward and that means you don't overtighten the side straps, which is a much more comfortable experience.

With your GPU, the Quest 2 should look way better than the Rift S in most PCVR games. If you set it up correctly, with the proper settings in the debug tool and close to native resolution in the Oculus app, it should be big improvement over the stock settings.

For testing the comfort, try the counterweight. And if you think the comfort is ok and the visuals are better, you might consider buying a second hand Quest 2. If you do, you can purchase a custom headstrap like the Bobo M2 VR and that should make it a lot more comfortable as well as adding some extra battery life.

You have a rift s currently?

What's your budget ?

In order

Meta quest pro
Pico 3 /4 (I have a 4)
HP reverb g2 ?
I have rift S
No budget but don't want to spend crazy amounts.
I've looked at the Pico 4 and I keep flipping yes/no but a pro is that it's cheap.
HP reverb, since reading about pancake lenses anything without is out
I could get a Meta quest pro from the bay for about 770 but then I wonder is that a lot to spend when the quest 3 make come out in several months and be cheaper and possibly better

Thanks, I'll look into the debug tool, though I'm just borrowing the Quest 2.

I understood that. It doesn't matter, the changes are only going to be on your computer.

As for the comfort, you are only temporary trying out a counterweight to see does this improve it for you.

When you get the Quest 2, ask here and I will tell you what to change in the debug tool and the Oculus app.

I've had the quest 2 for a few days as my son doesn't need it right now, I just played with the debug tool, upped bitrate to 350 and got lots of lag which is strange

What's resolution and refresh rate have you set in the in Oculus App?

While you are in the Oculus App, do the USB cable test and check to see what you are getting.

129hz
1.3x 4128x2096
Can't find the cable test

Lower the 120hz to 90Hz.
The 4128x2096 is low for the 3090. Set it to at least 5152 X 2608. Depending on the game you can probably max it out.

hmmm, the cable test is normally in that device settings menu. Are you using the official cable or just a cable you had lying around? The 3090 should be well able to handle a 350mbps encode bitrate.

@Klunt Bumskrint have you unticked the air link box, probably teaching you to suck eggs but it was a thought :)
I've actually got it working nicely with the Airplay instead, via usb was being a pain which is a bit odd. I'm just in the situation now where I absolutely don't need a new headset but I really want one which is a confusing feeling. I had the same feeling with the Mini 3 Pro and I bought that!

Counter offer of £750, still sealed. Whaddya think?
I'd offer £725, meet them in the middle. What's their feedback like? Is it a decently high number and all positive? Examine it in detail. I know you're being warned off on here but remember with Ebay you get a guarantee that the item is as described. If it's not new, if it has been opened, if there is any fault, I also think you'll be covered of it's banned by Meta or something, you get your money back.

Ebay nearly always sides with the buyer in a dispute. They even refund you themselves if the buyer refuses to refund you, they then chase it up with the buyer to get the money. £225 saving on new is decent. Quest Pro looks good especially now local dimming is working, only thing that would make me hesitate is that the Quest 3 will likely be out in the Autumn, it'll be cheaper and possibly have some better specs, but YOLO etc, you can say "wait for x" forever and never buy anything.

Local dimming has pushed me, offered 725, doesn't have much feedback and said that it was an extravagant gift from his uncle. Either way the bay hates sellers so I think I'll be alright, worth the risk of the hassle if it is nicked.
