Upgrade suggestion - X99 or skylake?

I wouldn't recommend x99 either tbh. Everyone should just wait. If you don't need to upgrade don't. 1151 or x99 are not worth it.

Wait

That would depend on the individual and what they are running now whether the change is worth it from a performance point of view, which yes I'd agree with, but from a cash point of view X99 wins over i7 skylake.

I would wait for Skylake E or what ever the next upgrade from skylake would be. Anything older then 2010 could wait. Upgrading now would be pointless for either platform. If you're not having any issue with your CPU then imho I would wait. Next gen is right around the corner. Intel (we hope?) wont make the same mistake twice with releasing a lower performance CPU. No one will fall for it twice? We would hope?????

Skylake e isnt until q3 2016 thats like 12 months away. Might aswell wait for the one after that as well then as it wont be that long after.

An upgrade is worth it if its justifiable to the end user. I upgrade every 12 minths so will probably go skylake as well as haswell-e.

Lol, people recommending Skylake!

Skylake has its advantages in certain scenarios. It's cooler, draws less power, and comes with a better stock configuration for gaming. If you don't want to overclock (maybe you don't have time for it), or if your building a small form factor PC, I'd actually consider the 6700k over the 5820k.

I'd only get Skylake if I was in the market for SFF or if I planned to use the onboard GPU tbh, it's a bit of a rip off otherwise.

The 5820k is £20 cheaper than the 6700k on OCUK, though remember that you need a more expensive motherboard, and more expensive RAM, since you need 4 DIMMS for X99 to utilize it's quad channel memory interface.

Also remember that the 5820k overclocked to 4.4Ghz+ is a monster in terms of heat output and power consumption. Not everyone wants that for their gaming rig, when it provides no current benefit over quad cores for games, unless you are running quad Crossfire/SLI.
I've recently made the jump from the spec in sig to a 5820k based X99 setup, (yet to overclock it). I've read that they can run hot, but having owned 3770k, 4770k and several 4790k's. I cant see it being as bad as theese non soldered chips can get under certain conditions.

That maybe so bud, but i doubt the power draw difference and fps at Stock (isn't going to be than a few fps at best i'd imagine) would be enough to warrant not getting X99 and a better platform.

I've used the 4770K, 4790K at stock and overclocked, the 5820K is still better in my IMHO.

Thanks for everybody's replies. It sounds like neither choice is a bad one so that's a worry off my mind.

I went with the X99 in the end since the spec on the prebuilts was slightly better for the range I was looking.

Now I just have to survive the days of pacing whilst waiting for the delivery!

There were no bad choices there, but well done and best of luck!

I switched an i7 860 out for a 2500k a few years back, and enjoyed a very noticeable boost in gaming performance. I'd imagine you're gonna be really happy with your new setup :)

I have never quoted myself before, but boy does that statement ever so need it. Defend your purchase to the death! lol love it!!

Bud not defending anything just because i bought it and my post was in jest, i can't for the life of me see where i've said something though that isn't actually correct, i stated that if someone was looking to build a new system, yet didn't have the cash for an I7 build, I5 Skylake is the way to go, but if the same person had the cash for an I7 skylake build, he should in fact go to X99.

OP has made the best choice, but simon feel free to post why, if money was no object, you'd pick a Skylake build over X99?

Well done bud, Enjoy it, pop some pics up when it's all running.;)

Agreed 100%.

Not sure why you are being accused of defending your purchase
X99 is a great platform to be on, it's even recommended by 8pack on these forums. Yes i7 Skylake is a good processor, no doubt about it but it's more expensive and has less cores than i7 5820K, that's what people are saying and that is why X99 is being recommended.

To the OP, enjoy your shiny new toys. I'm sure you'll have fun building it and using it for years to come :)

You're missing the point, which is that either way the op would have made a good decision. There were good reasons put forward to choose either platform, and thats what we do best in this forum, we provide people with all the angles to help them make up their own minds. But you put down anybody body who didn't agree with your recommendation.
