I currently have a AMD Athlon 64X2 5400+ i have been able to play all the games i have wanted over the last year, my mobo on supports AMDX2, whats the best CPU i can get?

I want to get another few month out of the pc before i start a new build.

not so cheap :) but if its gaming your after then that would be overkill not many if any games would be made to optimize four cores so the first 2 would be better :)

Some motherboards with a bios upgrade can take something like this

but that depends on your m/b :)

If its just an am2 m/b then oc your 5400 to 3.2 or buy 6400 be (if you can find one)

Your m/b manufacturer claims to support this cpu but I would just check on that it may need the latest bios :)

Also if you hang on a bit there are some new x2 cpus coming along sorry dont know right now where to find the info without googling but you may want to have a look at those aswell :)

EDIT just had a look again and it looks like your m/b is an AM2 so it will downgrade some of the features of the cpu if you install an AM2+ cpu so you may want to upgrade your m/b aswell :)

whats the 5400 run at is it 2.6 or 2.7 ......... I'll be honest running the 7850 in your am2 m/b you wouldn't notice that much you'd be better and waiting till you get your new system unless money is no object in which case can you buy 2 and i'll have one for free ;)
 
Im thinking, if i get this will i need a new system build?

Will this justify not upgrading?

Or should i fork out the £100 and get the Phenom ?

Im happy with my setup now, i know a new CPU will give my games that extra breathing space, and preform better.
 
If your just after a cpu then either oc your 5400 plus a cooler

if you can find one buy a 6400 plus aforementioned cooler

this will be happy days in your m/b

If you want a phenom you wont gain a lot out of it unless you get an AM2+ m/b which yours isn't.

For a good upgrade as in a noticeable difference me personally would go for new m/b and cpu as you will then gain the benefits of running a phenom tri core or dual core ( when they come out) over a 64x2 athlon also if you prefer you could get a new m/b and a 7750 or 7850 and o'c it but once again you would need a good cooler for that. It all comes down to money:)

The system I have in my sig maxes out everything I play apart from Crysis Warhead \o/ it was a good upgrade because I went from a 7600gt and a 4600 (2.4g) so the difference was big ...... it's all relative in my opinion and once again to do with money.

If you have a 4890 in your machine then your cpu will be bottlenecking so an upgrade would be good but personally I would go for a new m/b and a phII 720 and you would be happy :)

Going to find a 6400 this should be enough till i get a new system build.

EDIT: I also have had no problems maxing out my games at 1680x1050 with everything on max. Just allot of the games i play are all Source Based Engine games. When the source engine was developed, GFX Cards back then were not good enough to take the full load, so the game was developed to be CPU intensive as CPU's were more powerfull.

This is still the case today, L4D is extremely CPU intensive, so the extra power from the 6400 will just do
 
Good luck finding one I know they are out there but be wary of pricing also I've heard a few complaints about stock cooling a new cooler could be a good idea if you got a sunbeam or a titan or a true for that matter these could all be used on your new rig aswell :) other than that yeah it will be a nice and hopefully cheap upgrade :)
