Upgrading from an Intel 9900K, do I get a 13th Gen cpu or is it worth waiting for the 14th Gen

I’m considering upgrading my Intel 9900K but undecided between something like the 13900k (maybe even the 13700k would be an adequate upgrade), or would it be wise to wait for the 14th Gen? I guess prices for the 13th Gen could drop by then. But unless it’s quite a big drop, I think I’d try and wait for the 14th Gen if that’s likely to be a lot better than the 13th. Obviously both will a lot better. But wondering how much better the 14th Gen will be.

13700k would be a good upgrade Phil if you have to upgrade now.
I'm waiting for Meteor Lake though, so that DDR5 is more sorted and cheaper. Supposed to be in production already.

14th gen probably a long ways off, I'd be surprised if it releases within 12 months.

Either buy 13th gen now, or wait for Ryzen 7000 with 3D Cache IMO.

What's your use-case ? Do you game, do you do any content creation, do you code etc etc.
Until you tell us why you want to upgrade the CU, we can't advise you.
It's quite likely that not upgrading at all will be your best choice (given that 9900k is still a strong processor), but we need more info.

you can play the waiting game every cpu generation. 14th gen is way off, and then when it is released you could say wait for 15th gen etc. if you have a good use for a new cpu then upgrade now, otherwise don't bother.

I'm a 4k gamer and my 9900k plays very well with my 3090 so I don't think it's worth upgrading yet. Again as others have said, it depends on the resolution that you use

I just made that upgrade from 9900KF to 13700K. Whilst the CPU is a nice jump in performance, I also did it for the new platform features like PCI-E 4/5 and used it as an opportunity to update some other components.

We still don't really know when 14th Gen desktop will land. It is both a new process node and architecture for Intel. Could be great, but Intel have some history with this...
The move from monolithic die to "glued together" chiplets might even hurt workloads which have traditionally been strong for Intel. They might not iron-out the kinks until 15th Gen.

I'm in the same position, and mainly game. Next upgrade will be a new graphics card for 4k. I have absolutely no intention of ditching the 9900k until at least Meteor Lake, and quite possibly Arrow Lake.

Games development is dominated by the consoles, so if gaming's the most stressful thing you do on the PC, the 9900k has years of life left in it. Obviously there are corner-cases where a new CPU might help, but unless you are in one of those, there is no reason to upgrade - especially considering the enormous CPU and platform costs at the moment.

Any chance you can please run the test in this thread:

dont you mean single core ? doesnt AMD use chiplets and its workloads are strong look at the 7950x with productivity

I was thinking single core, gaming and latency sensitive apps. It took AMD a few generation to match Intel in these areas. With Meteor Lake, Intel are playing catchup and their design is complex. The question is, will they nail it first time?

I have the same CPU and I am also currently looking to upgrade. I have decided to go with the 13600k as it offers similar performance to last gen 12900K which is astonishing to be fair. Only issue I can see is that sucker runs HOT!
