Upping the power of an alternator? Chav related question inside

Car audio 'competitions' are normally about making as much noise as possible. Which isn't hard. But quantity != quality.

I guess you have never been to a car audio competition then..

Bass competitions are about making noise

Audio competitions are about tonal accuracy, depth, imaging, lack of interference, installation and quality

As opposed to using my feet yeah?

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Why not try and back up your ridiculous off the cuff comment with EVIDENCE?

Thats right, 'cause you have none.

So, explain how you produce "evidence" that something "sounds" better on a forum you only "view" ?

What you have just asked me to do is comparitevly as stupid as both my spelling of comparitevly and the phrase "dont look at me with that tone of voice".

My home system (the stereo portion anyway) only cost about £650-700 new which is nothing in real hifi terms but it IS real hifi, and it sounds lovely, if I do say so myself. I would be curious as to what is involved to make a car system sound so smooth, balanced and separated properly within a car environment!

You obviously do not have a clue what you are on about. I suggest before simply stating what you think (which couldnt be further from the truth) you actually look into it next time.

Take the alternator into a motorfactors and find the biggest one they do that fits the bolts. Probably a new Mondeo one.

If it's any help Ford have used the same alternator mountings from the mk2 Cortina right up until the Focus, so I doubt they have changed. I have a 55A one off a Mondeo with the front pulley changed to a V belt type on my Anglia.

you obviously made that decision based on experience, so what experience have you had?

I guarantee you an in-car system cannot match my hi-fi set up at home.

Don't guarantee anything - you throw enough money at a problem and you can do just about anything. if i had access to th e same sort of technology in the car that i do at home for reasonable cash - ie, audyssey room correction - i could make my car stereo sing.

I bought my friend's old SQ system - worth over £1,500 when new - he replaced it with a system that he wanted to enter EMMA-UK with, once finally installed (took a while!), it sounded unbelievable and it was composed of 3 amps which he paid over £2,000 *each* for plus comps worth over £3,000 - lord knows what the rest was composed of.

Even he said a modest home hifi system would outdo his ICE system in terms of sound quality.

Super.

What equipment do you have in your car? If it's such a good environment then I assume you've spent thousands on amps and component speakers mounted optimally in fibreglass door/dash pods? Or have you just replaced the speakers in your doors ;)

My issue with all of this though really isn't people wanting a decent audio system in their cars, it's when they spend many times what the car is worth/cost on the kit it's just daft, it's pointless and silly, they could have spent all that on a better car, but no, they very often stick it all in some little crud box piece of crap and roll around town bringing noise pollution with them.

My other major beef is that these people very often have their 'music' so damn loud and with so much bass that everyone else can hear it, hell I can very often hear the barry boys sound systems over my own, and when they are drowning out my Johnny Cash or Led Zeppelin with their infernal drum and bass tunes ...well I don't like it.

You'll be surprised how loud you can turn up rock and roll before it reaches pain threshold levels. It'll drown out drum n bass any day. Get some Stray Cats banging away in there and play them at their own game ;)

And also make the car very heavy and impractical. I just don't understand what the point is to be honest, but the same goes for the ridiculous "show cars" that people pour money into that are virtually undriveable. It's just a bit of willy waving at the end of the day.

Mines probably worth more than my car though and i havent really done much with it, but i suppose i drive a really really lower value car :p

None.

I have a few bits and peices lying around though, like my Genesis DMA

it wouldnt make the car heavy at all  a subwoofer and two speakers, thats all you need for quality. a box of tricks that sat between the HU and the amp/s would make such a profound difference. in fact, alpine already make such a box: http://www.alpine-electronics.co.uk/products/details/processors/pxa-h100.html which uses Audyssey multiEQ, similar to the what my av amp has. £149 = brilliant. needing an apline HU = doh, mine's a kenwood.

I have one of those attached to my Alpine (bought it on a whim tbh :D ) and the EQing functions have really helped get the most of out my stock speakers :) I don't have a mic so haven't the Audyssey functions but I've used them in home environments before and remain unconvinced tbh :)

If a job involves the word "alternator", this means copper content, copper is not cheap, add 1 expensive to the job. When you hear the word "winding", this means labour intensive so add 1 more expensive to the job.

In total, alternator re-winding is 2 expensive.

Show your friend the maths.
