Hi, I've just done a few upgrades on someone else's machine. I've put in a new psu, ram, and gpu.

But the problem is that the mobo takes a 20pin plug, rather than 24. So I've put the 20 in, but there's a separate 4pin plug on the mobo. The psu's 4pin cable is attached to the 20pin, and isn't long enough to stretch to the slot.

And so, the pc turns on, but nothing comes up on the screen. What can I do?

This pic shows the 4 pin and the 4pin plug.

Thanks

The 4 way attached to the 20pin connector is not meant to go in that connector, it's meant to go into a 24 way connector, but PSU makers have them as a 20+4 connector so they work with multiple boards.

The PSU should have this connector somewhere separate, if it doesn't then it's not compatible with the board. It might be labelled CPU1 and should have two yellow and two black wires.

What PSU are you working with? You are basically looking for a 4 pin cable often labeled "P4" as the pentium 4 chips used up so much power that an additional 12V power connection was required solely for the CPU's use.

I would not suggest you change motherboard because almost all modern desktop boards now use this "P4" connector. Instead, a PSU upgrade would make a lot more sense (if the current . If you can provide the full spec of the machine we can suggest some PSUs that will fit the bill.

Aye, know that PSU well.

Look for an 8pin cable that is permanently wired into the psu. It splits in two (to create two 4pin connections), connect one half to the motherboard (the other half can be left unconnected).

Crap. Now I got another problem. The pc boots up fine. But there's no display when connected to the 5770. There's only display on the screen when connected to the onboard vga socket. Now I know there could be a number of problems here

Yep managed to get all that working.

The pc is 100% fine when running off the onboard graphics. But it won't work when plugged in to the 5770. The 5770 is running, I can certainly hear it!

ATI has plug and play drivers right?

Have you plugged in the 6 pin PCIe power connection from the PSU into the 5770?

With that PSU it will be a modular cable; the plug that connects into the PSU end will be blue, the end that goes into the graphics card is black and says PCIe on it.

Are you using the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the card?

Also, if your version of the 5770 has two DVI output ports- you may want to try the adapter in each of them.

In that case, go into the BIOS (Advanced > Chipset configuration) and select "PCI Express" as the primary graphics adapter instead of "onboard". Should be on page 30 of the manual that simulatorman linked to.

Would you be able to take a few more photos of all the connections to the motherboard?

Have you changed anything in the BIOS other than the graphics? You may want to reset the CMOS as well so you can start again from motherboard defaults.
