urgent help on 1st build!

i've got my old 9600gt gfx card, and the psu from my old dell. the problem with the psu is it's enclosed in like a massive box, bolted in a million places with an impossible method to get it out.

i'll try swapping the gpu though.

two other pc's in the house, this one, and the study one, both dells unfortunately.

if i manage to get the cpu out, and there's no beep on startup, would that mean a borked mobo?

that sounds possible...what if it just isn't powerful enough? (650W)

then again, my 9600gt only needs 1 pci power, so it should have been fine then.

possibilities: faulty psu/mobo/cpu?

BTW: anyone who has trouble with the evil push pin cpu cooler, get a flat head screwdriver, and use it to rotate the pins.

oh, and there were no bent or damaged pins I could see, which is a good thing.

i seriously hope it's not a dodgy part, all that RMA business is not for me =(

i'll try my best to get my dell psu out. it's 650w so it should have the same connections i hope.

*brings out hammer and chainsaw*

right, using my dell xps psu is out of the question, since it's inside the case...unless i cut off the metal sheet on top of it, i can't get it out. this means i need to use the study pc psu, which is easy (i hope) to remove, but it might not be as high voltage.

plec, thats actually a really good idea, ill see if i can heave it up onto my desk.

edit: wewt, im a gangster

guys, you wont believe it.

i removed the cpu power...started it up...and bam...it doesn't shutdown.

the problem is that nothing shows up on the moniter...lol.

now, i think there are two explanations...

1) the psu can't give enough power to everything for whatever reason, but when it doesnt have to power the cpu, it can keep everything else running.

2) something is dodgy about that cpu power cable, because as soon as I put it in, it shutsdown.

now, to add to this freak occurence, why the hell doesn't my moniter show anything lol, it recognises i put a gfx card in, but nothing else.

P.S: Plec, i'm only 14 lol, I don't really lose my rag about anything. =)

refresh summary, hopefully this will help give an idea as to what is being troublesome.

When the CPU Power is disconnected, the computer no longer shuts down after a few seconds, all fans keep spinning, BUT, the gfx card gives no image on the moniter. The gfx card we know is fine because I tested a 9600gt to no avail.

Possible problems are:
  • the PSU
  • the cpu power cable
  • the socket on the motherboard for cpu power
  • something else.

the problem with the other PSU's is that they have the mobo power, and power for the gfx card, but then no remaining cables for the cpu power.

yeah, you're right mattus, the mobo connectors are completely different from the ones my mobo uses. I should have a speaker on my mobo, at the moment the only connectors from the f-panel are power sw and reset sw.

=) thanks Ucof! I don't have any speakers, for sound i use a pair of creative fatal1ty's.

if there is a beep, should it be coming through an output device, like headsets, or from the mobo/case itself?

my front panel gives me an audio cable, but when plugged in it doesn't provide beeps, so I guess that's the wrong one. I'll hunt through all the extra things I have to look for one, but I don't really remember seeing one.

Mobo is a Gigabyte UD3P if I forgot to post it
