USA wants your social media history.

Exactly.

Also what happens if you don't have social media to share? Or what if you do and just decide to delete everything before you go on holiday? Or maybe you could just make another account under a false name and transfer everything?

Hmm

What happens is that you don't go to your American holiday.

If your/my/our/country wants to go all 1984 on us then pretty much everyone except the gun toting USA will comply because we are a bunch of subservient dogs and arm chair activists.

No disrespect to us be we are inconsiquential to the powers that bes decisions.

Just hope you die before it comes.

Enjoy your holidays in America while u still can.

Plan being proposed for visitors from non visa waiver/ESTA countries.

In other words, it doesn't apply to anyone on this forum, so the truth is that the USA does not want my social media history.

Visa waiver/ESTA countries:

Andorra
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Brunei
Chile
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Japan
Latvia
Liechtenstein
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Monaco
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Portugal
San Marino
Singapore
Slovakia
Slovenia
South Korea
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Taiwan

I should be OK, I'm not any of them.

You're OK because the UK is exempt. It seems that very few people in this thread have read the article, and/or don't know what an ESTA country is.

I'm pretty sure they don't need to access UK accounts because they can already just check all our data fr3ely.

They don't need UK social media accounts anyway, because the UK is an ESTA country and therefore exempt from this rule. I'm guessing you didn't read the article?

Bank balances, transactions, wire taps, text logs, emails, browsing history, online purchases, sexual preferences, previous partners, cameras in the home... cavity searches.

Where do you draw the line?

that’s a good question.... I’m really not sure where the line actually stops. All of them you mentioned is already out there and gathered anyway.

Why is it I always seem to find those that shout the most about invasion of privacy are those that bare their inner soul, political views, sexual proclivity and what they ate for dinner to all who might care to hear and read about them? ;)

I don't even have a social media account to hide, so Rockin' Rollercoaster here I come. :p

No social media account, sounds very unusual, everyone has social media, except maybe those in areas where internet coverage is spotty, like maybe the infrastructure has been damaged, by a brutal civil war, which would stop people from accessing Facebook, WHILST THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR ISIS!

No Disney for you chap, you're off to Cuba for an indefinite holiday, don't get too excited though, the only thing all inclusive here is the water boarding.

Do you view them as the thin end of the wedge at all?

For the sake of discussion. No.

It's no difference to keeping a diary or journal.
All be it extremely detailed and flawlessly recorded. People choose to be essentialy tracked by these companies.
How many medieval spies and courts have been brought down by records and plots written on parchment?
Maybe educate the users, maybe sacrifice convenience for peace of mind from 1984 style fantasy future government

Thin edge of the wedge, beginning of the end, feel free to stop it. Like I said in a previous post
You can't stop it, accept it and live with it. Buying v for Vendetta masks won't solve it.

Thought this was serious until I read on!

Not sure if this bit is but...

I don’t use social media at all, no twitter, snapchat, Instagram, nothing.

Had a couple of those platforms but it’s been years and years since I’ve used them.

I read the article

Then you should have already known that this new rule does not apply to you.

but I don't know what your quote of me has to do with them most likely having free access to British data at will anyway, required or not.

It doesn't, but it has everything to do with the fact that you were whining about a rule that won't affect you at all. As the article made perfectly clear.

so we can never moan about laws and other things which are abhorrent if they don't affect us?
better close 95% of campaigns down then.

The government probably is the creator of “Anonomous” just to sell more masks. Ha ha ha!! Could you imagine that!

Lol well great so close thread.... No point discussing anything. Thin edge of the wedge and all.

If I came from a "****" hole country id be happy to hand over my FB.

Nah it was all tongue in cheek, I use social media because it's a big part of my wife's life, both socially and for her business. I did drop off for about a year in my youth though and I know a couple of IT type friends who binned the concept after they found it to be very toxic. Sometimes I wonder if the benefits truly do outweigh the risks of using social media.
