Hi,

Just wondered what opinion was on buying used hard-disks. Potentially seem considerably cheaper, which is good as budget rig i'm just trying to keep useable doesn't warrent much more.

But, how easily are they busted? Can they surivive much postage?

I see that many now come with lifetime warranties - better to spend ~£30 for a lifetime warrenty 80gb than £10 for larger older unwarrentied?

Views appreciated!

I have 2 used HDDs I use all the time! One is from No competitor talk please! [Hitachi Travelstar - 30GB] which I use in an enclosure and one I have in my main rig which I got from someone on these very forums.

HDDs are rated at very high impact tolerance when they're not doing anything - ie sat in a box. However, if a HDD is poorly packaged every single shock it receives will be bringing it one step closer to heaven :D

Weather you get a second hand HDD is down to what you plan to use the HDD for. If it's for your OS and/or important data, I would be concerned. If it was for backup or just storing random junk then go for it.

My raptor was second hand from No competitor talk please! :D It was only a few months old and i saved quite a bit!

The packaging it came in was better than the packaging i got with new drives bought from shops.

I wouldn't buy an old second hand hard drive though and even then i would only buy one if it still had warranty remaining.

Guys you can not talk about other sites in this context, it would be classed as a competitor then.

E.G. Tesco if you are buying some juicey melons is ok to mention, selling PC equipment it is not.

Not second hand but I bought a Hiatchi 160GB from OCUK in their clearance line and it died in 2 months. Wasn't best pleased.
