Using competitor products in the office

I think the employer should be able to stipulate what you use in the office, yes. In some cases it could be counter-productive to prohibit the use of certain items however in terms of the impact on morale.

I think it should never ever be forced on someone! Freedom of choice..always!

Having said that can you imagine the fun if a Boeing executive landed in his private Airbus @ Seattle :p

I don't think any company has the right to stipulate what people can use for personal use. Heck, a lot of the graphic design/marketing department at my work use Apple Macs for their work - the CAD guys use their own systems, and the rest of us generally just use the system we have. However if we have a specific requirement or will be more productive using a specific product it's in their best interests to give you what you want to achieve the task for which you are employed to do!

However, if she's using her personal phone for work then she's daft to pass up a free phone and contract.

Though some cases are a little more complex. Imagine the CEO of Waitrose (Mark Price) shopping at a cheap and nasty place like Asda - the press would be over it like a rash. However, he gets discounts for shopping at Waitrose, so why wouldn't he - heck even if he didn't, why wouldn't he? It endorses the products he sells. If he doesn't it undermines him a little. Sure, popping into the corner shop for a bottle of milk or some tea bags is one thing (convenience), but main shop, he has to be careful.

Although branding is important for businesses, what happens publicly vs what happens behind the scenes are very much 2 different scenarios.
