Using Multiplugs

Fire Service : Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on like your Fridge, Freezer.

In the unlkely event something was to start a fire your home insurace could maybe argue negligence for not turning it off.

Its the multi plugs. I'm happy isolating the modem, but is it OK turning the desktop and 4 multi plug off, or is it safe leaving the modem and desktop via the multiplug on for 2 days
The question to ask yourself, is why wouldn't it be safe?

If it's switched on and working while you're there, why would it be any different when you're not?

(genZ don't know how to wire a plug so a multiplug would be alien to them - delulu)

Desktop unless in standby is going to be burning electricity several units a day - hasn't everyone checked out the power consumption of their gadgets when they had their first smart meter ?
so I'd unplug a desktop for starters, unless I'd burned money on a solar setup.

How much power exactly do you think a switched off but plugged in PC actually uses?

My overnight "idle" consumption is ~160w, that's with a fridge/freezer, work laptop, and a server running, a couple of night lights switched on for the kids, a couple of ceiling fans running in the bedrooms, various phones/tablets charging, and a bunch of lower power electrical devices (e.g. TV, sky box, routers, WIFI AP, etc.) running or on standby.

How much is unplugging my PC going to drop that by?

if you have increased domestic consumption due to unecessary plugins,
that reduces break-even time for expensive solar/battery installs, which for for me on 6odd units a day would be a long 9 years(may be in new property then)
ie solar expense wouldn't be justified if you turned stuff off.

when I got smart meter and energy monitor plug I realised the naim amp I'd previously left on 24/7 was a unit a day, and decided that saving from turning it off when not in use would offset the
sonic&reliability concerns I had had.
I work from home and have quite heavy consumption.
I also have 2 kids and a Mrs. We use around 30-40khw a day.
I run the whole day from batteries charged at night, and payback is about 2 years :)

My dad used to turn off everything before bed and if we went on holiday in the months leading up to it we would empty the chest freezer and fridge so everything would be turned off!

Absolutely mad now but I guess electronics were all dodgy back then.

As a child you would know bed time was coming as you heard the sound of several plug sockets being switched off and plugs unplugged!

I think it was mental even then.

I don’t inherently distrust multiplugs…

But I do inherently distrust anything electrical / power supply related stuff from the usual ‘online marketplaces’. I have to buy it from shop, or from a known UK online store.

Must have read an article once about a fire from a defective plug bought online and it’s put me on alert for life :o

I never turn anything off, even if I leave the country on holiday for two weeks. My PC even runs 24/7 without using standby or hibernation as I like the ability to remote in without delays if I need to, I’ve never had an issue. Now that I have more smart devices than ever these days, like lights, cameras, smart heating for my radiators and doorbells etc, I can’t turn stuff off, or otherwise my smart devices and any schedules or automation’s set up around them would be completely screwed.

If people are happy leaving the fridge on 24/7, then any other appliance will be just fine in standby mode.

Step 1, turn router off using smart plug.

Step 2, errrrrrm.
I used to do that to fix connectivity issues on my grandfathers router remotely, but I scheduled the Hue smart plug to come back on one minute after I turned it off remotely, worked great :D

I've been away from home for about a month nearly everything is still on and whirring away! :o

Doesn't draw a huge amount when we're away maybe 430W or so.

All the plugs and sockets have all passed safety standards. None of the sockets are overloaded. A lot of the important devices are on a UPS anyway.

If you've had issues with your electrics then I can understand. But the devices you've plugged into it are low power devices and should anything go wrong it'll trip way before something happens.

My brother nearly burned the house down when his electric blanket caught fire back in the day so thumbs up to your dad :)
