Hi chaps,

I'm after some general buyers advice for Volvo v70's.

My budget is 6k, I'm looking at 2.4 170 petrol or the 2.5t engines. I'm looking at se spec and would prefer automatics as I will be doing wafty motorway miles, I do approx 10-15k a year but this can vary year on year.

Does anyone have experience with these, or know of any things a potentialbuyer should beware?

Cheers.

Thanks for the response, off to look at a 2001 t5 with se lux pack tomorrow... will have a check at the bits you mentioned especially. Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

My mum really didn't rate the turning circle on the one she had. I think it was one of the newer V70s. She ended up dropping back to a slightly older V50 within about 6 months. If you're looking at an older one, you should be OK.

Yeh agreed with above, the older cars do have a better turning circle so parking is easier in the older cars

Funny the things you forget or get used to after a while
That's becuase they've got an I6 as opposed to a transverse 5-pot.
The turning on my s90 is ridiculously small at only 9.7m
Not bad for a car nearly 5m long ;)

As for the V70s, the petrols are stupidly uneconomical and the 2.4 really isn't anything special but at least it's quite torquey.
I'd go for the T5 personally.

The turning circle is poor.

I had an S plate 2.5t auto. That would do about 32mpg on the motorway but was woefull around town. You would think that the newer engines might be better but i wouldn't count on it!

Thanks for the responses, as for turning circle - it's a good thing to note but shouldn't be a problem for me really. The t5 is currently the favourite... admittedly I know it won't be great on fuel but besides anything else its one of those cars I just really want to own!

This is the car in question,

Can anyone pick it apart or...?

It'll be due for a cambelt change if it hasn't been done very recently. I have the 2.4t and I get maybe 26MPG so expect a little lower than that.

I have a 2.4 awd turbo, with lots of town driving the average mph drops down to 20mpg.
Great car though, very comfy, well equipped, and quick enough. I love mine tbh, its like driving round in a battle cruiser, lol.

Mines got 16inch wheels so the turning circle is better, larger wheels are limited more to prevent catching.

As above the turning circle on P2 V70 is pretty poor. It gets worse on the higher spec cars as the bigger(wider) the wheels the larger the bumps stops.

All the petrols are pretty good really, and will go on for ever, but you're into 185hp d5 territory with that budget (just), so i would look for a facelift P2, late 2004 onwards. comms, winter and leather packs are a must have.

The sport adds a slightly nicer steering wheels and a few other tasty bits of trim and a slightly odd gear lever arrangement.

There are a few 4 wheel drive sports around (that are not xc70s) and they are really nice.

I've had 2 and am on a last off the line v40 sport lux at the moment, but will no doubt have another in time.

From a fairly quick scan, this looks to be a good buy.
Facelift, low miles, winter pack, half leather and that funny gearlever i was talking about

This is good too, miles may look high, but actually thats only a half/third of its way through (and may go a lot futher than that - there are few for sale with more than 300k and i know of a few with more than 500)

The one posted a couple of replies back looks overpriced compared to these two.

A quick update for you all, I picked up the t5 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLVO-V70-T5-...4805226?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item230bfa406a )
after a 300 mile round trip.

It was a pleasant drive home and the weather held out so all good.

Poor quality phone pic, will get some proper ones once its had a good wash :)

1 Owner, FSH from Volvo, then independent Volvo specialist once out of warranty. 130k on the clock, very clean interior, all the toys... TV is sweet :D
Exterior is as you would expect from an 8 year old car. A few marks on the bumpers, alloys lightly curbed which I plan to fix come summer.
I paid £4200 for it so I'm happy.

Cheers for all the advice.
