I've always wanted a good valve amp but they have to be driven hard to be appreciated and that's often not possible in a practice/bedroom environment. However, I came across this.. and I WANT ONE!!!

Not the cheapest thing in the world, but it's so cool. Ideal for bedroom practice or a small studio.

I have one of these, 10W all valve :) got ti for £90 off ebay

The Zvex amps look cool. That might be a good solution for your situation although pricey. Another option is the Epiphone Valve Junior Head and Combo. They are 5 Watts of A Class Valve so that might be too loud for you but at £99 plus postage its a bargain. If you want add me to msn at [email protected] and we'll chat.

Wow, thats ace! I remember our music tech teacher showed us his new purchase of a mini 2W valve amp unit. Cost him £250. Was really nicely made though. Connected to his 4x12" we could hear it right down the hall. Was ideal for studio work as it got a nice valve sound without too much volume :)

Bloke I used to work with was mad into vintage valve amps and guitars, he was in a few bands in the 70's, the beckett being the biggest one. Anyway he had me running all over country picking up vintage valve amps for him, mainly Vox AC series iirc. He made quite a few quid buying and selling too, he bought a soundcity amp (again a slight guess at the name, as I was never into amps/guitars etc just going from my memory) one morning and by the afternoon he spoke to a dealer who offered £200 more than what he paid for it.

I've been looking at the Valve Junior.. do you have one? how do you rate them?

The Epi VJ is best in the head version apparently.
There are also various mods scattered around the interweb you can do to improve them.

The combo version is OK - but the speaker isn't the best and early versions have a terrible problem with hum.

I have one on order and will possible ship on Friday so I'll have it hopefully Monday. There is a 118 page thread over at 18 Watt.com. There is numerous mods for this amp. Its own sub culture of mods.

Here are a collection of samples

For £99 plus £26 p+p (I live in NI) I can't be bad to the price and if I don't like it I can sell it on Ebay.

Si, If you want add me to msn. Email in trust.

THD Hotplate, an " attenuator". Drive a valve amp hard without having it at ridiculous volumes, clever eh?

Yes although some say it loses tone. I am fortunate that I can drive my Marshall 1987x 50Watt at 7 into a 2*12 without much complaining :)

However those in situations with other people living next door it can be a problem so the option is an attenuator. I'd rather have a slight lose in tone and still manage to get good tone from a non-master volume tube amp any day.

Interesting facts #1003

The inventor of the device that makes you turn up your valve amp really loud but then turn it down keeping the same sound is an inventor called Tom Scholz and he called it the Powersoak (IIRC). He also invented the guitar walkman.
Tom Scholz is also the brains, guitarist and writer behind rock band BOSTON and the reason why it took about 30 years to write 5 albums is because he's too busy inventing stuff.

That's an interesting fact dmpoole. I think Marshall hold the copyright to the name Powersoak. Did Scholz sell them the rights to the name then?

Oooh, don't know.
I was a big Boston fan at the time and was upset he didn't make albums regular.

If I where you I'd be glad that he didn't otherwise we might have not had the attenuator today.

Can I add you to msn to chat about guitars and stuff?
