I had a Trace Elliot Speed Twin that had some nice attempts to give a good tone at lower volumes... You could switch between triode and pentode mode to reduce the power, or only run half of the power stage. Independant volume for both stages helps too, so you can have the preamp fizzing and the power turned down, or vice versa. Not as good as letting it off the leash, mind...
