Valve Index VR

For squadrons at least, a high refresh setting with lower graphics, is better than the other way round, with regards to help with nausea.

Also, as Mel invited, once you get it, grab rec room and post when you're available on the hangout thread, and we can do some of the quests together, they're good fun.

Do you have to use the mic?

I'm a bit shy, so I don't bother using a mic :p

Reason for getting it natively is you reduce any sort of latency that may cause issues. Some games (those that require quick and accurate reactions) just work better natively.

EDDIT - And if you like Creed demo, look at Thrill of the Fight to actually buy, it doesn't look quite so good, but it's generally reviewed better.

That makes sense to me,to use games natively.

Graphics aren't everything,I prefer gameplay over graphics, most of the time !

lol nah, not with that accent ;)
Don't worry, if you join in with us on some of our games, you don't have to talk if you don't want to. Not that you will get the chance. @Unseul and @ShiWarrior are yackety yaking all the time, can't get a word in edgeways with those two. :p

Seriously though, talking is optional. But, because of fact that you are present in VR more so than normal pancake gaming, it doesn't feel like you are talking on a mic. It just feels like you are in the room with the other people having a chat. I hate talking on a mic in multiplayer games normally, but, have no problem talking in VR, (if I can get a word in with those two) :)

im sure that once you start to hear us, you'll just jump in and start talking :)

even just to tell us to shut up!! :p

lol nah, not with that accent ;)

Cheers for the encouragement.

We shall see how it goes :)

keep your sessions short and go easy on games with any kind of teleport or motion enforced on your character to begin with.

Then what tends to happen is your brain builds up tolerance.

People that want to experience rollercoasters, space sim dog fighting or open world games from the go run a high chance of hitting motion sickness issues imho... build up to it is my advice.

I know,I'm definitely going to take it easy to start with!

The Quest 2 is coming today!

I think I've got everything downloaded I need to start with.

Oculus software,Windows mixed reality and Steam VR

Half-life:Alyx and Star Wars Squadron

Okay,so I've connected it to Windows 11.

Airlink works and I've set the bitrate to 200mbs.I've got the Quest 2 resolution set to the highest resolution and 120hz,but it still looks blurry to me.

The battery is lasting no time at all, they are almost forcing you to buy the enhanced strap with the extra battery!

The Quest 2 doesn't work like that. If you have the graphic settings and bitrate too high for your system/connection it will look terrible. Think about it. Imagine if you were trying to play a game on a 2070 at 4K, you wouldn't have a very good experience. But, you have the Quest 2 set at a much res than 4K. It's actually 5408 x 2736.

Did you check your IPD like I said in my last post?

120hz uses way more battery life. The battery lasts about 2 to 2.5 hours at 90hz, It drops to around 1.5 hours at 120Hz.

I've tried different resolutions and I have not noticed any difference. It's like it stuck at 720p.

I haven't tried HL:Alyx or star wars squadrons to see what I think yet.

Think I will try the Fibre cable to see if it helps.

120hz using more battery makes sense.

Yes,I have set the IPD to 3,which has made a difference to some extent.

If I could just get windows looking better and cut out the blur a bit, in general,I would be very impressed with the Quest 2.

Loving the VR experience so far despite the above issue!

What games have you tried?

You really need to measure your IPD, its not that hard, there are even phone apps that will do it. You just might be unlucky and have a really large IPD (70+)

Oh, I forgot. Sorry. Even still, the 3080 in a laptop is nowhere close to the desktop model in performance. The laptop 3080 doesn't even reach the same performance as the desktop 3070. It's still faster than your desktop 2070 though. But it's not powerful enough to run the max render resolution.

I've only tried the first steps game, which was fun.

But I definitely need to try a game on Windows,to see how it looks and runs.

But I definitely think there is something not right with airlink and the resolution on Windows 11.

In addition to what Mel has said, don't buy the official elite strap. Get a regular powerbank and attach that to the back of the strap you have. Velcro cable ties (or hair bands, or regular cable ties) should all be capable of doing that. It'll greatly extend your battery life, and improve comfort as it acts as a counterweight.

EDIT - And just to double confirm, trying to drive effectively 2 4k screens at 120fps, is not going to work with a 2070.

I'm finding the headset fairly comfortable. But if I keep the Quest 2,I will definitely need to invest in either what you suggest or just get the damn official enhanced strap and battery.

Try virtual desktop, you have to buy it, but, it works on Windows 11. You can try it, see if it's better than Airlink. If it isn't any better you can refund it as long as you don't use it from more than 2 hours. If you do like it, you can decide if you want to keep it or not.

There are better options for much less money. The Bobo M2 VR Pro is great and comes with a battery already. Other people might have more suggestions. Almost any aftermarket headstrap is better.

I will try the fibre cable to see if it helps with the resolution.

Okay, cheers for the info on the strap.

Windows 10

I may have to give Virtual Desktop a try then as I find Airlink to be garbage most of the time, but it so much better than using a wire :)

I find airlink is really variable. Some games look great, but others compress horribly and look blocky.and blurry. I've even tried lowering the resolution and it doesn't make much difference.

Virtual Desktop all the way for me !

ive changed no settings, works superbly

windows 10 here
windows 11 is REALLY bugger at the moment, especially for VR !

Gave it ago today and it’s so much better than Airlink. Quality is fantastic and launching games is simpler too!

Im on Win11 and all seems fine for me.
 Good stuff.

So,I'm using the official fibre cable,no difference in resolution when changing the resolution. So windows still looks blurry.

Windows mixed reality isn't detecting the headset.

Trying star wars squadron through origin, soon as I enable vr in the settings the motion controls stop working. You can't seem to change the resolution,as its stuck to my monitors display,so 1080p seems to be the resolution.

Paired an xbox controller through windows and the oculous software, that doesn't work.

Talk about getting frustrated

Your view in the quest will never be as clear as your windows desktop.
but it should be better than "blurry", maybe someone else can give a suggestion here as i know there are settings you change for the cable connection but ive not messed with them so dont know.

I don't know why you're using Windows Mixed Reality? It has nothing to do with meta (oculus) headsets. WMR is for headsets like the reverb G2.

I dont think star wars has motion controller support? it works ok with my hotas. have you checked the xbox controller is working ok in windows controller properties?

Frustrated? welcome to vr as a noob :). it has a learning curve (and with the quest its one of the easier learning curves).

Well,to be honest I'm not finding it too blurry, but I just wish it would be sharper if that makes sense.Strange how changing the resolution in the oculus settings doesn't make any difference.

I was just keen to try out windows mixed reality to see how it looked compared to airlink, didnt realise it doesn't work with the Quest 2.

Regarding star wars squadron, the xbox series x controller should be working with it,but it just doesn't seem to be detecting it.

I've paired the xbox controller in the oculus settings, but it seems to lose the pairing at wont pair back.

I had to turn the laptop and Quest 2 off to have a break.I was about to do damage to something !!

LOL yeah have a break for a bit then try again later when you've calmed down a bit, best way. About the clearness, it will never be like your monitor, you'd need a £2k Varjo Aero for that!

Not sure why the xbox controller isn't working. Try the game on your monitor 1st, its easier if you cut out any faff like having to navigate menus for the 1st time in a headset. I bet theres an option in the games settings somewhere to enable xbox controller.

Edit: yeah agree with Unseul, you need to be pairing xbox controller with your pc, not your Quest. You do have the dongle to do that (atleast mine uses a dongle)?

I reset the xbox series x controller and paired it in windows again,it is working now with star wars squadron.

OMG,I'm simply blown away with squadron,so much fun no matter what resolution its running at.

Great stuff

For Squadrons i found higher hz was better than higher graphics. Dropped shadows etc.

Playing with hotas had me giggling flying around. Never actually did much of the missions though! Need to get back into it when i finally buy another ssd for storage.

I've got everything running on ultra but I don't know what resolution its running at.

It looks fine with no apparent stutter/frame drops.

I'm just in the training thingy, flying around,so much fun !
