Valve making three Steam-related announcements next week

Yeah i'm just going to write off the 210-odd games i've already got on steam to move to linux....or not lol.

You will still be able to play your old games on Windows, future games being optimized for Linux and having better performance out of your hardware is a good thing. People don't like change, computer people really really don't like change lol. I see ValveOS as a great thing personally. Why should Windows be the only way to play PC games. Look forward to trying ValveOS out. W7 for work stuff, ValveOS for gaming.

It depends how many of them get ported. I'd like to see something like the Greenlight thing to get older games ported to native Linux.

It'll be interesting to see how many are ported, it could be quite a lot if Valve is really serious about people abandoning Windows for gaming.

Whatever the limitations of a SteamOS, I think this is a nice thing to have, and a good way to start planning for the future. I would imagine in 20 years or so, we will have a box that either streams from the cloud (most people) then enthusiasts [guessing most people on this forum] will have their own setup. It's an exciting future ahead!

looks like the intention for older/incompatible games is to leverage the horse power of your primary windows PC and stream to the SteamOS.

It could be that the early stages of release will be to get people comfy and I assume target those who already have HTPCs.

Wonder if theres the potential there for someone to develop a roku style steam streamer.

^^ This, all the big players are moving their pieces into position for a digital future. Eventually Hardware limitations will give way to 'services' that offer the type of experience you want. (PlayStation' Sony), (Steam' Valve), and (Xbox' Microsoft) will be uniquely positioned to offer their own services through their own digital distribution. Using whatever 'service provider' you choose on multiple devices. Valve are making their play for more exposure now, especially as they are a growing company that until now has been on what you could call a sinking ship (Windows shrinking desktop PC market). For PC gaming this is can only be a good thing imho.

We thinking the second announcement will be a Steam box itself?

Hopefully the third will be Half Life 3.

Big picture mode already has an internet browser on it, they will no doubt add more for SteamOS. Microsoft must be ******** themselves.

I wonder what the other announcements will be as this one is pretty big news.

Great news. Hopefully MS and Windows will no longer be mandatory for PC gamers*. Then they can focus on being the 2nd-best console maker instead ;)

*No, Linux lovers, that hasn't happened yet :p

This one could be the Steambox pictures (possible specs), Source 2 engine? It's going up against AMD's announcements so it could be the Steambox with nvidia graphics?

New announcment is up, along the lines of what we already know/guessed.

but 300 steamboxes being given out as prototypes!

Just a reiteration of things we already know, though it's looking like there won't be a single official Steambox from Valve, rather several reference designs.

Makes you wander how long it will be before SteamOS and Steam hardware actually launch, if it's done in 'Valve time' we could be looking at another year or so lol.

:p HAHA

I'd like to think we will get a first version of the OS out by at least first QTR 2014, They've clearly been working on this for quite a while, so it would seem silly to announce it so far in front of a beta release at least.

They need people to get behind it, otherwise it won't go anywhere.

Also i'm gonna say Source 2 is the 3rd announcment.
