Valve Slammed By Consumer Protection, Issued Cease And Desist On Anti-Consumerist EULA

Funny how 99% of the time official bodies use every technical aspect possible to work around common sense and lawfulness but when it comes to something like this, which stands to gain them more revenue, they throw the technical side out of the window and go for 'common sense'.

Eurgh.

Good read ty for the link.

Like I care what the Germans say.

Are we talking about the same people who have over the top game censorship?

Yes, of course I will listen to what they have to say

They need to get their own house in order before criticising anyone else.

Since I agreed to the EULA, has GabeN kidnapped my Steam account and sent me a postcard of him giving it "sexy time" on a beach.......... NO !!!

Wow, that happened quicker than I expected. Be interesting to see how it pans out. Probably with Steam being unavailable in Germany :p

What on earth has Germany's censorship laws got to do with whether or not the Valve EULA is dodgy as hell?

Amazed at the negativity here again. You buy something, you shouldn't have to sign your rights away to use it. Games companies have been getting away with murder since digital distribution went mainstream, about time they were slapped into order.

Amazing and all as Steam is, that change to the EULA was a sneaky piece of work.

Agreed. I love the Steam service but some of the comments here extend well into fanboyism.

They listend to nobody when gamers/publishers/developers informed them that their censorship could potentially damage the industry in their country. They refused to listen.

Now however, they seem to be going in heavy handed and telling someone else that they listen up or else. I just disagree with their double standards.

Maybe a bee in my bonnet and were it any other country, I could probably swallow it a little easier.

This is just my opinion, I am not saying I am right, it is just an opinion to add to the debate.

I personally do not believe in the torch and pitchfork mentality towards Valve, but again, that is just my opinion.

Has an EULA ever been upheld in a court of law anyway? I think I recall one has but not sure.

I am a steam fanboy, I hope that's ok. You don't have to be one though so I guess I'm not the evil type of fanboy.

Germany has taken the lead but as it's European legislation it would also affect us but I doubt it would come to that anyway.

I love steam it is a great way to buy & manage games though I really don't agree with the way they handled the EULA, I'm torn between a great company that provides a very good service & my rights as a consumer being eroded.

Your not really buying them, its just a long term rental agreement.

That's the thing I don't like about Steam. You pay full retail price to just in effect "rent the game long term". They should have had a subscription model in place like Lovefilm, Netflix etc. I play XX monthly and I get to play XX games. To play another I would have to uninstall X game to make room.

Yes I do use steam, but I don't have to agree with their view.

I do agree that forcing people to accept the EULA is wrong, there should be an ability to say no and still have access to all your games purchased under the original EULA you agreed to but you're just not allowed to buy anything else until you agree to the new EULA.

I hope this doesn't result in Steam being forced to provide a service allowing people to sell on their games as there's no such thing as a used digital game.

If anything, video games are more like consumables in my opinion in that once you have played the game, you've gotten everything you need from the product and you are not really losing anything by selling the game on (except with some multiplayer games). The problem though is that what you're selling is every bit as good as a new item, so unless they are priced higher, there's very little incentive for people to buy new. To me it's a bit like going to the cinema, then being able to sell your ticket for it to be used again. There's clearly something wrong here.

All it would do is harm the industry.

Unfortunately though, the luddite mob at the gate are insisting they do this and the law makers who also have no idea what they are doing have sided with them.
