*** Valve Steam Machine ***

When I had a Steam Deck I could only get Java Minecraft running. This would be fine but it excludes you from playing with console players.

True, good point. I suppose some might see the Java version as the best one, albeit there are strengths to both versions. That said for these sorts of games I do feel like a Windows-based PC in the better bet (and needed for Roblox). Albeit you could do that here with the new Steam Machine, but you add cost and knock out its main strength.

Very tempted actually. Wonder if they will require pre-ordering in a queue like the Steam Deck...

Looks good. But not for me. I much prefer steamdeck and a proper customisable pc.

What i am excited about is the OS software. If they release it, I might move over to using that rather than Windows eventually as MS is going in the wrong direction as far as I am concerned.
The biggest issue with Linux though is that you can't run games that use anti-cheat. So you would need a dual-boot setup to run them.

seeing how well steamdeck performs, this will be absolutely fine. Especially if they nail the price. SteamDeck has paved the way for this and I'm glad valve is doing it. I'd very happily buy one when it's out, but price will be the deciding factor for me. I'm thinking it'll be 499-599 range which places it around the top end steamdeck.

it's less about raw numbers and more about optimizing stuff, I don't expect it to perform as well as my £2K rig but I doubt it'll cost anywhere near that either so if it performs as well as a £600 rig then it's spot on. Access to my whole library + basically a PC is perfect. I can't stand the console lock down bs.

Great stuff, now just waiting on the announcement for Half Life 3 :D

Just picture it. Half Life 3 as the launch title for Steam Machine.

If I recall, the Steam Machine was attempted over a decade ago, 2014? Though, it failed. Anybody have any insight into why it never really picked up? I guess Valve's offering couldn't really compete with the rival consoles at the time.

I’m liking the look of this. Im not bothered about huge power but being able to play my existing large but fairly old steam library would be good. See how much it is when pre-orders go live.

SteamOS wasnt ready and the market didnt really accept it. The Steamdeck has shown the situation has changed now, its still not perfect, many games dont work due to anticheat issues.

It's an interesting device but I think the Steam Machine is a harder sell to most people than a Steam Deck - the Deck offers something genuinely different - a portable gaming PC that isn't a laptop.

As someone who already has a gaming PC (as you would imagine is probably the case for the majority of Steam users), do I really need to buy another gaming PC, even if it is nicely pre-packaged with a different OS? Not really, it would be a massive luxury just to have it plugged into the TV instead of a monitor - i'd probably rather put £400-£500 towards getting a nicer (OLED?) monitor for the PC I already have.

There will no doubt be a small portion of the customer base ready for an upgrade that consider this instead etc. but I struggle to see the popular market for this one compared to the Deck.

Edit - I suppose there's the market of console gamers with no PC history that they're going after, maybe there's going to be enough interest from that market in a ready out of the box PC of some sort.

That's also why I'm a bit sceptical.

The first concept of this already failed back in 2014, which yes I know had different market conditions at the time, but I just can't see what the USP for this 'sequel' is really.

Disgree. Xbox ******** the bed has made Steam a viable contender. They can do what Xbox can't.

Well be affordable for one. Offer exclusives.

Affordable is fine but needs to be combined with an actual demand, which is what I think is limited - why would most people actually need one in the first place?

I've not seen what's being offered as exclusives, maybe there's something on that list worth buying for, is there a link to anything listing exclusives?
