*** Valve Steam Machine ***

Affordable is fine but needs to be combined with an actual demand, which is what I think is limited - why would most people actually need one in the first place?

I've not seen what's being offered as exclusives, maybe there's something on that list worth buying for, is there a link to anything listing exclusives?
PC games. Games you can't get on consoles. I could see if this takes off, devs making exclusives for the Steam Machine that you can't get on console. Maye get a mini PC revival.

I'm a bit lost as to which bit of my post you were specifically disagreeing with really :p

If they offer it at a good price point, it could. Maybe I'm getting too wrapped up in HYPE but this could be the next big console to enter the market. The first since Sega in 1999.

I don't see that's enough to generate a big market in the same way the Steam Deck managed really.
Steam deck allowed PC games on the go, that was a whole new market.

Steam machine is a gaming PC in a packed market and SteamOS is still limited in compatibility. It will also fave competition from GamePass consoles. I can't really get excited about it personally.

I can see a market for them if they pitch the Steam Machine in close combination to the new VR headset as the goto package. The headset is what is getting me interested, based on the the Linus demo of it. If he was getting the experience he was with it being driven by a spec Steam Machine, then, depending on price, that might be the hook to get those who don't currently have a gaming pc, and buy this combo to get in to VR gaming. The design and performance of the VR headset looks like it might be the one to finally get me in to it, assuming my old knackered shortsighted and presbyopia riddled eyes can deal with.

I disagree. I've had a SteamDeck for nearly three years now and have a Bazzite based gaming PC. I've not yet found a game I want to play that's not compatible with SteamOS. It's only online games (yawn) present issues with their anti cheat code.
Online games are a massive part of PC gaming and not being able to play COD/BF/Arc Raiders etc is a huge limitation to the platform.

All depends on the price, around 500 it will be worth it.

Mainly catering towards those who have an older pc and dont want to upgrade it.

Just don't see enough of a USP for that sort of impact - it's a fixed spec PC that does what gaming PCs do.

To anyone with a current gaming PC it's a massive luxury to buy a second gaming PC really, even people at the 'time to upgrade' stage are probably wanting something a bit more robust.

To anyone without a current gaming PC, it needs to appear as a better purchase than consoles AND gaming PCs to land at the top of the list for a prospective buyer.

It'll work for some people sure but I just can't see mass market appeal. Evidently Valve can, or they wouldn't have bothered but to me it seems like something a lot of people think is a neat idea but won't buy or they'll buy one and then realise they didn't really need it and they'll be all over the second hand market.

Very exciting stuff. It's not for me as I'll always want something far more powerful, but there's every chance this bridges the gap between a console and PCs with their "scary/confusing" specs for the laymen.

I agree it is stuck between PCs and consoles without the uniqueness of being portable that made the Steamdeck special.

I've had the deck same length of time & I disagree with you :)

Games like F1 2025 are labelled as unsupported (won't run) even in single player mode because of anti-cheats built in. There's lots of others which would play well on the deck but are just the same. Pretty much every new game these days has some form of anti-tamper/anti-cheat built in and they're all labelled as "unsupported on steam deck" for that reason. Plenty of older games/games without drm/anti-cheat but newer ones are becoming an issue.

Bazzite PCs are a different ballpark as you can easily dual-boot them if necessary & games which do run usually run better than on Windows.

Sounds like we play different games. The likes of Borderlands 4 and Space Marine 2 work just fine for example. As I said, I've yet to come across a game that doesn't work on SteamOS but that's just a personal perspective. It's so ingrained that a game will work on SteamOS that I don't even check to see if it will - it's a safe assumption that it will.

I wouldn't dream of having Windows on a PC these days let alone dual booting. Bazzite all the way...

Pretty underwhelming specs for anyone who already owns a decent gaming pc. But they are not target obviously.
Im thinking of one if price is right, have a great PC but to sit in living room and give access to the rest of my family to my(and "family") 1000+ games. Cheaper game launches, free cloud sync etc. Will be a great addition to my house and save me buying over priced games on other consoles we have.

I'm going to get one, mainly to support the ecosystem/idea - i think it is ideal for people like me that have an insanely huge steam library and want a quick easy way to access it in the livingroom. Maybe it's not the best option for AAA games / the latest multiplayer but it will likely be what i turn on for a quick run through of hades or some large screen vampire survivors.

As someone who got the original steam streamer for exactly that reason, I'd suggest you wait until you see 2-3 months of reviews on Steam forums before you pull the trigger - Valve h/w is of variable quality, especially early-doors...
