*** Valve Steam Machine ***

I am tempted, I know its expensive but looking at replacing a Series S in the bedroom which is mostly used for Kodi and some light gaming. It needs to be small and quiet and even the 2TB version comes in cheaper than what I am looking at building PC wise

But this was something I was looking at before the jump in prices and even before the budget needed increased I was still struggling to justify the cost, so at the moment its more of a nibble than a bite

Seems to have been lost in the news (indeed Valve had release notes out on the 18th w/3.8) but it looks like Steam OS with 3.8 is now rolling out officially for most hardware (i.e. not just limited to Valve, or other supported hardware). Indeed because it's just Linux Steam OS always ran pretty well on AMD hardware, but seems interesting nonetheless. Also indicating working with Nvidia to put official support for Nvidia GPUs in the future.

Over the past few years I've often read people are waiting for Valve to roll-out Steam OS officially. Well it appears that's happened at long-last. Not sure if it's worth nuking a Bazzite installation for it, but mildly tempted just to see if it's better than last-time.

I really want it, I really don't need it, but it's so cool!!

Getting a PC to be small and quiet with decent performance (aka just works) is all older man me wants, despite how fun pratting about building one can be. Got a few months to talk my self down and just get a switch 2 for OOT instead

It's not going to have decent performance though.Unless you're going to limit the titles you play to older games, and performance-lite Indies.

People have been able to run SteamOS for a decent amount of time now on a lot of AMD based builds.
Nvidia support isn't guaranteed this year either

My laptop's the one I want SteamOS for (4060 mobile) but I don't want the Nvidia performance hit which is why I'm not on Bazzite already.

Yes you could, but technically 'unofficially'. I know when I tried Steam OS on a small Minisforum PC (AMD APU) last year it was already in a pretty good place. But this does have some 'non-deck' expanded support for a wider hardware base and I would assume QoL stuff like not pointing you to Steam Deck buttons in the initial setup etc. It is also an official announcement from Valve and is going to get some press and may drive those who were waiting for formal Steam OS to try it.

I figured it’s best to try get one and then figure out what I’d use it for. Worst case, it makes a nice coaster

I'm really ****** at Valve for allowing you to buy it with the Steam Controller included, so anyone who buys it with that essentially gets to skip the long controller reserve queue. As someone who reserved my controller on May 10th, my payment schedule according to Valve is 2027! Yet console buyers get to skip that queue; it's bloody disgusting. They should be selling it console only and fulfilling controller orders first.

Maybe?

You might get the order booked and still be waiting til 2027 for stock to fulfil it. But to start off you need to win the lottery just to get in the queue to wait for the chance to order a steam machine.

Was curious picked out of parts from ocuk to match steam machine as close as and cost was similar but didn’t have same form factor etc

Considering market and state of cost of electronics it’s cost is no surprise.

I’d still like one myself as I just love gaming on SteamOS. It’s been a breathe of fresh air since using the os on my ROG Ally

I think knowing this thing has less gpu power than the base ps5 is gonna put a lot of people off, or even make them question is it truly worth it. It does have a way better processor though.. I guess.

Steam people are always saying what a huge backlog they have. If this is the case that could translate into little game sales. Especially since the Steam Machine can barely play the latest games i could imagine a lot of people will use it as a off-ramp to sell their PC and settle down in front of the T.V playing their backlog. Which is why Valve can not sell at a discount.

Steam Machine doesn't need to, if you look at the direction of the games industry over the last 2 years. Most people are not playing the latest AAA titles which demanding high end graphics. The top Steam titles being sold just says it all.

Major reason why the Steam Deck is doing so well for it's low end hardware.

Most people who own a ps5 or Xbox probably don’t even know what gpu power it has or what tflops mean etc

I think this forum forgets sometimes avg joe users don’t look into all the fine technical detail

Yeah true. But at 1300 quid or whatever, I think they’ll do their research. This isn’t an impulse purchase at these prices.
