VAR & Rule Tweaks - 21/22 Season [2024/25 Update]

That seems like the classic tech paralysis you get with people on here.

Waiting for the next big thing round the corner by the time they get round the corner something even better is coming so you never get anything!!

Dont know why they are fannying around with these rules which some refs will follow and others wont. Just make the clock stop whenever the ball is out of play, its really a very simple solution.

The average ball in play last season was 54 minutes over 2 halves. Add another 36 minutes on top of the 90 and you will get a game that lasts 2 hours. Then add on the extra ball out of play for that extra 36 minutes, probably another 10 minutes.

Never going to happen.

The easy solution to that is to set the clock to not be 90mins. Set a match to be say 70mins of the clock. Stop the clock when the ball is out of play and you have 70mins of actual football in every match. Its a matter of compromise, stop the clock and reduce the targetted length of a match so as to avoid 140min matches.

I dont see how their current rules stop timewasting at all, cant remember the last time I saw someone get a 2nd yellow card for timewasting, despite continued timewasting. Something needs to be done because almost half of a football match not actually being a football match is ludicrous.

We all know yellows for time wasting will be ******, when they start dishing them out in the 1st half regularly then it might make a difference, but I doubt it will happen- same as all the other 'rules' they are adding.

This is going to be fun........ :D

"two or more players surrounding a match official in a confrontational manner will result in a yellow card and be reported to the Football Association".

Thats the sort of thing which will be heavily enforced for about the first month and then not bothered with afterward

Another thing that we as fans will get to whinge about the completely random times they decide to enforce the rules. I fully expect there to be 2 games from the same ref with a week between where a completely different interpretation will apply.

Understandable really, longer and longer matches, more and more matches. When is it going to stop? The greed from the organisers is insane. Every other country has one cup yet we have two.

Don’t think the players like the new rules that’s incoming.

Ultimately the new rules will make bugger all difference to them. Its to stop teams like Newcastle taking the **** with the amount of time wasting they do throughout a game. The bigger issue is the sheer number of games in a season. That is what makes the difference. Not another 5 minutes per game. Lets be clear here, they are trying to stop teams from intentionally wasting loads of time in the game, thus short changing the fans.

If they want to protect the players more they need to cut down on pointless internationals and stop competitions from growing ever larger.

Quite the strange place, and a lack of self-awareness, for Varane to jump up onto his platform. He's not wrong about the amount of games but these rules are being brought into play because of the likes of himself and his colleagues who use game disrupting tactics to manage the match in their favour. If they behave with the shenanigans, they'll be off the pitch in the normal amount of time...

Psst Rafael... You may want to have a word with your captain before he makes you late for your ice bath and supper

What do you mean? Varane isn't known for time wasting. They aren't talking about the last 10 minutes of a game, they are talking about the time wasting from the first minute. The fact that Newcastle played over 9 minutes less than Man City on average per game last season. Thats a tactic of slowing play down at every possible moment to gain an advantage.

Apart from 1 or 2 high profile games how do you know Newcastles opponents wasn’t the one time wasting ^^

Ball in play isn’t that good metric to see who is time wasting.

Arsenal when they visited for example spent the entire 90mins rolling about the grass and arguing with the ref.

Great to see the Toon living rent free in people heads
