Driving into Bristol on the m5 through the variable speed section at 6:45 this morning and got double flashed. Hardly any cars about and all the gantries were unlit. I was doing about 84mph on the speedo so probably got caught at about 83mph.

Hmph :(

Variable Speed Camera Questions and Answers
Question:
I have received an NIP for the M5 at 87mph. The photo was taken by an overhead gantry camera which was not illuminated at the time. Does this affect the validity of the NIP?

Answer: It sounds like the speed camera was set to a national speed limit (NSL) of 70mph. The sign does not have to be illuminated for the NSL, only during a reduced lower speed limit e.g. 50mph.

They left it on at the NSL for the free cash

A few people in work have got fined for going through over 70mph when the nsl symbol is illuminated but if traffic is light and the gantries are unlit I've always breezed through at about 80 without a problem.. Until now.

You were probably just below the 10%+2mph threshold at 80mph due to your speedometer overreading by a few mph. At 84mph shown on your speedometer you were probably going about 80mph actual speed so got caught.

Oh great *now* I find out these things are always on - just been down that section today for the first time in ages! Not sure if I strayed up into the 80s or not :(

EDIT: Actually no, I was in the newer section from the M42 down to J6 - does the same apply there?

Well hopefully they'll deal with it by fixed penalty, if an nip arrives I'll ask them to take into account how early it was and how light the traffic was, not had a ticket for 7years, very sorry etc.
