VEGA IS FINALLY HERE, ITS IN STOCK ALONG WITH SOME EPIC BUNDLES & FREESYNC DEALS!!

Not meant to sound like a flame post... but why are people buying these when the Nvidia offering is a lot better on performance, noise and power for a similar price?
If you don't care about spending an extra £10 a year on electric or having to open a window after 4 hours of gaming instead of 5, then they do have numerous benefits (also they are no noisier than a reference Nvidia card).

At RRP you get a card that can trade performance in games with a comparably priced Nvidia card, while performing in applications like an Nvidia card costing double, and in addition you get support for the VHS of adaptive sync instead of the BetaMax it means your monitor upgrade options are much more varied. Unless you're specifically looking for an excuse to hate on them then they are great cards if you're looking for an upgrade.

Is that a software or hardware thing. The 56 does have some limits fixed in but the lower card will always be the best seller I think, its just a wider market. Most people arent looking to set world records

Mostly freesync but also AMD is superior in a few games. Some are just presuming AMD will enhance performance such as the +18% in pubg recently, features are turned off ? who knows tbh. I just wanted to see a new architecture for once, Im not obsessed with perfection it just has to be competent and part of AMD's stated vision. Or they might be spinning a yarn and cant deliver, I dont agree its immediately obvious nvidia is better as they contrast sharply in strategy at times. Any nvidia buyer should probably wait for volta.

Whoever you favour, AMD are late fits into every sentence of describing Vega really. They'll have better coolers later, etc. Hopefully they catch up because competition is good for technology advancement

Slightly OT but Pubg is loads better since last week on Fury never mind Vega. Feels much more than 18%, although it might be because i'm now in the Freeysync range. Dont know if its the latest AMD driver and / or last weeks Pubg patch, but i'm running much higher FPS from 60 -100 @ 1440p whereas was often 40-70 @ 1080p and laggy even on Freesync. Cant remember my settings, they are somewhat toned down from ultra.

Yes because people here are looking for compute cards for applications... *eye roll

Mining performance doesn't seem to be all that great on the new cards - but I've only looked at a few figures.

GTX1070 seems to get almost twice the performance per watt... doesn't that mean the GTX1070 has a longer mining shelf life as the return rate due to difficulty decreases which is when power concerns will become more important.

So I'd still expect miners to be going Nvidia at this stage... maybe I'm biased... but I certainly want AMD/ATi to become competitive again.

I use the compute functions of a card at least as much as the gaming functions (and not for mining either). As I said earlier the main driver for my decision to sell my 1080 and buy Vega was my Freesync screen. The improved compute performance is a little cherry on top.

When DX12 is relevant, Nvidia will have the bases covered.

but amd has them covered now, i dont want to buy a 1080 to only find down the road that it will tak a new card for them to get it right, amd do a lot of hardware implementation, its the reason why amd do so well with vulkan and dx12 games even with "inferior" hardware compared to nvidia

There's 3 dx12 only games at present. All the others have it patched in, in varying degrees of crapness. DX12 simply isn't relevant today and may never be. By the time it is (if it is) Vega will be but a distant memory.

For gaming, V64's powersaving modes can gain 30/40% performance per watt for only a 3/5% reduction in performance (which is still faster on avg than the 1070). These are user accesible modes, so no clock/voltage tinkering just selecting a Wattman profile. So not quite stock but also not a niche enthusiast clocking/undervolting either.

Since the 1070 and 1080 were the performance benchmarks to reach/exceed, Vega is configured to clock higher than its sweetspot to do this.

Another way to look at it is this. It can use the same power as the rx580 (200W) while delivering a smidge better than 1070 perfomance.

1070 performance for nearly 1080ti price though... if they'd priced it competitively, then it'd be ok... it's just... not

Yep, totally, at the game pack price it's not attractive but at the discounted price it is decent imo. Just wanted to point out the that the full perf/watt situation can't be taken at face value from gaming reviews (your previous post was in relation to mining and perf/watt vs 1070).

Dunno if I will regret it, been on AMD for ~10yrs GPU wise. I didn't go VEGA. I had waited for VEGA.

Sort of pricing put me off plus other things, 'all features' aren't enabled in driver currently. I'm thinking how long is the wait going to be? will it benefit all gaming and how much by?

If bios modding had been open I would have gone VEGA 56 with a water block and been happy with it. I think that was the nail in the coffin that moved me to buy a GTX 1080 plus how I felt AMD have gimped Fiji. Even though bios mod is not open on nVidia there were other reasons for the purchase that made it work for me.

Will miss FreeSync, but not swapping out the MG279Q. Will keep an eye on what occurs with VEGA so may revisit AMD again.

vulkan is the future dx12 isnt, valve have said that they are backing it from now on to get around the windows monopoly its why most devs are taking it on board, with the consoles being build by amd and xbox pushing dx12 to get the most out of the hardware its only a matter of time before it becomes the standard, games being made right now will be dx12 or vulkan and the likes of unreal getting support for creators we arent talking very long, when i buy a card i want it to last for a few years anyway i just feel that vega has the upper hand in that front @ msrp
