Video Game Hates

The price of controllers with paddles for ps5 - it's an absolute disgrace these should have been added to standard controllers and not used as an excuse to fleece customers for £200.
Particularly as the Playstation one doesn't have a removeable battery. Once it's dead the controller becomes an expensive paperweight.

I can't stand any slow walking/crawling sections. They don't add any sense of drama to the game. They're just annoying.

Un-skippable cut scenes are a pain. Especially in a game where you have a cut scene just before a tough boss so you have to repeatedly watch the same cut scene

I hate cutscenes that are prerendered at a lower quality than the actual game. Can’t recall any game off the top of my head, but it was a frequent occurrence over the years.

PS3 era tutorials, trying to do the original assassins creed and the prince of Persia (cell shaded) tutorials was a nightmare last time, gates the game without explaining why you’re failing!

Civ’s staged expansion pack release system, not the only game to do it but the one that I’ve sunk the most time and money into, would have liked it delayed a bit to be more of the whole game to start with.

I really dislike when games just start immediately, with no way to look at/change graphics settings beforehand. Arcade racers like to do this sometimes, dump you in to some rubbish opener.

Chatty Cathy characters that just never stop yapping are a good way to get me to dislike a game too.

It's been a while since I can recall seeing this one, but games that wrestle control away or completely freeze everything, so they can pop-up a tutorial tip to. I'll not play past the tutorial if I see this now. I think BioMutant was the last game I remember overusing this, and just stopped playing it.

I hate dilution. Choice is a good thing but not for MP gaming. Peak Era was 360, now numbers retained after a few weeks on MP games are so low I can't be bothered getting into a game. I had more fun on GRAW (which had terrible connections) and COD4 than I've had on any shooter post 360.

I also hate that to keep numbers they have had to introduce cross play with PC. One of the games I play stopped you blocking that from your lobby once the player numbers got low.

Wanted to Share a list of video games Hates to see if its just a me thing or a community thing

  • no option for performance / graphic mode
  • No real gameplay taking you out of the game every second (you walk cutscene, you walk more cutscene)
    • examples
      • Tomb raider (its an adventure/action game so less torable here)
      • Last of us - to an extent but its done well & is a story game so less annoying
  • Micro transactions in general
  • Quick time Events
    • special those that makes you repeat button presses R2/L2 without accessibility changes to help.
      • examples
      • Tomb Raider you have to mash R2/L2 to climb (in the first?) I cannot do that with my disablity
  • you walk/run so slow its painful
    • Examples
      • Hell blade 1 & 2 ( I get it in this game its almost part of the story but its too slow)
  • tutorial areas
    • this is a hard one as some games do it well, but those that waste too much time teaching you
      • examples
      • Gears of war 5 - waste an hour learning nothing
      • Witcher 3 - decent example
  • more cinematic than gameplay
  • Non skippable cutscenes
  • Multiple versions of games with season pass or dlc

I bring these up as I'm playing Hellblade 2, whilst I enjoyed the first, the second so far feels like a struggle to play
  • slow movement ( 8 hour game is really 4 hours if you walked normally )
  • everything is so blurry you don't see any real detail unless its a face
  • audio is great
  • combat feels great, but its bunch of QTE like event that feel decent but want to be have more choice
    • its block block attack, then its block block evade, attack - repeated for entire "boss" fight
  • the puzzles are black, so far not as much but with slow walking its painful as hell

ps happy to add other peoples hates if they want to get it added to the list
Most of the above - QTEs, unskippable cutscenes, multiple versions, P2W, microtransactions for things other than cosmetics, repetitive side-quests, etc.

One that really annoys me is both when you cannot redefine keys, and where you can but the game still prompts you with the pre-set key.
Neither should exist in this day and age.

DLC used to be cool, back in the day, but ever since people started happily paying for it developers have planned it into the game from scratch.
Just gimme the whole effin' thing and be done with it, or make it such a massive add-on that it's actually worth a couple extra quid.

Abruptly having control taken away from me for a cut scene or to force the camera into pointing towards a particular direction is something I detest.

Already mentioned but unskippable cutscenes are a pet hate for me especially ones that you are forced to watch again and again if you die just after it!
