Virgin are now going to use application throttling!!.

I use my PC as a file server out on the internet so i can access my files from remote sites ( telecoms/network engineer )

So i don't have to carry around about 800 gigs of firmware etc.....

this is a joke, might see if we can get a second line with BE on it, that should be much better, static ip address and all......

That’s what I have Be* and a VM line :D Had Be* to start with and joined VM as well due to the fixed 20Mb speeds when they got rolled out, how things have changed! :( :(

It's a shame that BT installation's for a phone line cost so much (£100 or so?) otherwise BE looks a viable alterative (once my contract is finished that is).

You migh be in luck, BT is only charging £29.99 for new lines until september. :) See seperate thread about this.

Yep, Got me BT engineer calling 10th this month (july)

For £29.99 (also opted for somert for a fiver but can't rem name of package lol)

Asap line shows up on adsl checkers, Goodbye VM :) (sad in a way as i loved the ntl products, just cs was a mess lol)

Going for a business adsl deal ;)

Now's the time to get a line, Some people already have one and are having a second put in with bt not batting an eyelid (after all more money for bt)

Well no more carpet-caps for me (yep they were capping me when even i had modem off for days lol, guess most here are wising up to vm's slightly hidden truths ;) )

I do hope if vm go pointy-bits-up that they inform the call centres to cease working and turn all lights off

Well **....I think the point is that it won't be legal :p

They get notified by the film/music companies who monitor public trackers.

Future looks grim for VM

seems many of its customers are switching to be/ADSL.

if they cap during the night or put in application throtteling ill be moving.

Pitty, NTL was great before VM screwed things up, i remember unlimited contracts, no STM and not even a letter through the door when i had bittorrent on for days/weeks solid

Joined blueyonder in about 2000, great service untill NTL destroyed the service by being joined together with them, damn virgin media.
And now this.........I thought it was strange that my download speed was halfed downloading TV shows etc. Its stupid really, pay for 2Mb and only get 1 :(

I also used to be able to download about 5 torrents at the same time and still be able to browse the internet. Now it seems even one torrent cripples the internet

David91,

Hmm maybe you should check to see if they're not capping at night in your area !

That was the last straw for me (and of course VM and VM-Fanboys etc say they don't do it grrrr)

Hmm maybe you should check to see if they're not capping at night in your area !

i dont beleive they are, im on the super-fast (and ultimatly useless when capped) 20MB package and have usenet running over night downloading stuff... (all those linux-distro's:rolleyes:)

ive often woke up in the night and checked my downloads, and ive not seen them drop the speed or cap the amount i can download.

But as soon as they start to im going to switch over to .be as it renders a 20MB connection useless.

i mean your paying for a 20MB connection to use it, they're is no point in paying and being capped 75% to a 5MB connection when you even think of downloading. VM need to either upgrade their network with DOCSIS 3, or think of other less restrictive ways of capping people

5%... rollocks!

Anyone here use Sky? Are there any capping/limits involved?
No capping, traffic shaping, limits, nothing. Period.

Switching to Sky from Virgin was one of my best moves ever. :D

What sort of speeds do you get on the 16MB service?
Unfortunately I only get about 4Mbit as I'm miles from the exchange, but I'd rather have 4Mbit 24/7 no matter how much I download, than it dropping to 2Mbit or 1Mbit after half an hour downloading.

Been reading this and have emailed VM a few times with qustions as to theSTM policy that they have.

Tis questions I asked were

1) Does everyone get capped after they hit a certain level or just the top 5% as stated on their website.

2) If they cant handle eveyone using 20MB all the time what hope for 50MB

3) Are they planning port/application throttling.

Here is the reply

"Hi ######

KANA EMAIL REF: ########

Thanks for getting in touch with the Virgin Media Support team.

I would like to start by apologising that your first query was not
answered sufficiently.

As for the Traffic Management policy, the 5% that the policy talks about
is a generalisation. Every connection is monitored by our servers and if
you reach a particular 'trigger' within the times monitored the software
on the server automatically manages your speeds. Therefore it isn't only
the customers who constantly download over the average amount of data
that are managed. Everybody has the potential to be managed on any given
day dependant on the amount they download/upload that day.

As for the 50Mb service. The rollout of this fantastic new service will
begin by the end of the year if the current trials go to plan. The
service itself will be run on a separate platform to the current
services and will therefore not impact the current services as much as
the 20Mb and 10Mb rollouts seem to have done.

Finally, I can assure you there are no plans in the pipeline that I am
aware of that will mean we will be 'throttling' ports as this would be
seen by many as a way to restrict access. This was the reason the STM
was brought in, so that we don?t need to throttle ports. All traffic
will be allowed and therefore the STM will be used to manage the
minority who wish to use excessive bandwidth on the network.

I hope this clears up the situation for you but if you have any more
queries I will be happy to answer them as fully as I am able. Please
reply to this email with any further issues

Kind regards,

Giving what going on thought someone might be interested to hear what they have to say!

Support team wont know about any trials etc which are going on, they are the last to find out about things.

Port/application throttling is already being used in langley (ubr05) as a test basis.

Can I ask where you got your info as I am taking Virgin to task on some points and should they be misinforming me I wont be happy.

Souce very high at VM ;)

Also sub contracter who installed ALLOT for VM and runs the test based trials.

VM will deny it to hell like they did with evening STM, then alex will deny it like he denied STM ever coming into play etc.

Funny lot VM are.

Ok cheers, have to have a re-think, but in the end I'll probably stay with VM as I'm too lazy ot change !! In saying that will see what the 50MB is like. From what I hear there will be no management on that!

Incorrect.

Currently 50Mbit has STM set for launch with a 10GB Limit between 4-9PM.

That may change in the future though dependant on ALLOT.
