Virgin are now going to use application throttling!!.

the STM will be used to manage the minority who wish to use excessive bandwidth on the network.

Ok. In other words.. if you download 500mb you are putting an unreasonable strain on Virgin's network.

From their website...

There are now two main types of broadband. One uses copper phone wire; one uses fibre optics. One was invented in the 1870s for phone calls; one was designed for the Internet. One is struggling to keep up with the growth of the web… the other is from Virgin Media.

I can't be bothered to put up a "fail" pic. Virgin Media is the Amy Winehouse of ISP's.

OK, this really is bizzare. As posted earlier in the thread, I called VM five days ago to drop to 4mb because 20mb is now useless. They said it would take effect immediately. It hasn't, I'm still on 20mb. But what's more, I have just downloaded 13gb at 2.33mb/sec (the full 20 meg speed) AND DIDN'T GET THROTTLED ATALL!:confused:

I'm going to pull some more down to see what happens......

I'm just going to stick to my 2mb connection. They can throttle me all they want, all they're doing is reducing my maxed out 2mb line for 3 hours into a maxed out 512 line for 12 hours.

Might see how much it'll cost to go with Sky, the only problem is i live in a flat and the management company won't let people put up dishes, maybe it's time to challenge that particular rule.

OK, I've just hit the throttle after a further 1.5gig, so in total I downloaded ~13gb before hitting the throttle.

I can live with that, especially if they are still charging me for 4mb ;)

You'll might find that it'll take the new speed when and if you reboot the router so don't reboot it :)

My thoughts exactly. When I go into the config screen of the cable modem it does have the 4mb config file installed, but in the status screen it's still showing as 20mb downstream, and 768k upstream. If I reboot the modem it'll obviously take on the new settings. Best not reboot it then ;)

I've been with Virgin/Blueyonder for over 10 years now and they've gradually got worse and worse. My so called 20mb internet was more like 6mb and my bill has just gone up a further £11.50 from now on (I was told that I had a lifetime offer but apparently they don't exist so it looks like I was lied to)

I've just phoned them up to get my discount put back on but they won't do it so I've left. Disconnection will be on the 6th August so I'm looking forward to switching over to Be next month.

Goodbye crappy speeds, goodbye throttling, goodbye crappy customer service. Hello Be......

Going back to the original post about "application throttling" some (most?) fileshare clients allow you to specify your own port for the downloads to stream on. So it could be that VM are going to use application ports to prioritise certain online gaming traffic?

The capping is quite frankly a con. Just because the VM BB service has been the victim of its own success, why should we now have to have less service for the same price?

Exactly darkblade

When you go to your local pub and buy a pint you expect a pint, Not a price increase for less than a full pint

But this in a way is what VM are doing, Giving you less for more

The only hope is that people will wise-up and VM and maybe others will be forced to redo A: Pricing B: Actual cap/limits etc

Alas the average joe don't know what speeds they get so are blissfully unaware, So i can see isp's of the VM type still making a fortune by constantly raising the prices and cutting the product

I notice the new "mother of all broadband" advert's running now lol it should be "the mother fubar of all broadband" lol

If enough cancel maybe things will change, On a slightly brighter side, Ofcom has hinted at cash to BT when they do their own fibre network

So maybe after all (looks like 2015 or 2020) VM will lose its cable monopoly which would be a blessing looking how things stand now

Chances are it will be the high usage people leaving VM, the type of people that cost VM more then they make from them. So if anything, all these high usage people leaving will mean VM lose less money. And if VM can make more money from high usage people leaving then hopefully that will mean making it better for those who decide to stay.

Dist,

You think VM will take away any capping when people have got used to being capped or are going along with it just so when heavy users leave they can have a nice fully un-capped cable like before NTL bought the VM brand name ??

Sheesh wake up n smell the coffee lol

Them there caps are here to stay i bet you a fiver

Put yourself in VM's postition ........

Mr and Mrs Joe bloggs have 20meg BB, We add some sort of time/data limited caps etc and they go along with it, Ok some are leaving but so what .........

Hmm lets see if they take a price increase, Hmm well yes they did, Nice for us we can get more Mr and Mrs Joe Bloggs signed up and as always steadily up the cost while doing nothing about the caps/limitations or even add more

Do you honestly think after VM have actually culled (if at all possible) heavy users or sporadic heavy users they will go back to a un-capped system which would then in turn maybe get heavy users etc back ?? C'mon use ya noodle !!!

Exactly what I had! One day the bill came and it was £15 more  So phoned up and aparently the offer I had which at the time was a deal with no time limit had ran out!

Sorting new BT line and sky BB this week

STM isn't going anywhere, neil/alex want to keep it.

In the early days of telewest/blueyonder it was supposed to be used as a stop-gap measure to upgrade the network to docsis2, this was stopped however as you probably know most of the network isn't built by them but was just bought by NTL/DC/C&W etc...and half the network wasnt compatible/required too many upgrades.

Of course...then it was thought up just how much bandwith they could save while still raking in huge amounts of profit while doing the basic minimum amount of upgrades to the network to keep it going.

I think you'll find lower tier users have more effect on the network than heavy 20Mbit downloaders, there is a lot more 2/4/10Mbit users on a UBR/Segment than there is 20, do you really think it's the heavy downloaders causing the problem when they have a much higher STM limit than you?

20Mbit users usually just download 24/7 and not much uploading (i guess those users are smart enough to use usenet)

2/4/10 Users are the ones who want a BB package that's cheap and still use a lot of bandwith while not wanting to pay for it (reminds me of tiscali users, look how bad that ISP has got)

They are mostly the ones who youtube/iplayer/upload (torrents) a lot.

Oh...and it's a lot higher than 5% who get stm'd at any one point ;)

Was using 20meg as an example, Purely because i always had the fastest cable i could

As you say it makes sense lower tiers cause some problems as they're bound to be the most subscribed to

Well hopefully some die-hard vm fans might start to see the light lol
