Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Speed test is bs, doesn't tell the truth at all. Let's be realistic there isn't download servers every where for what we want to download. Though on topic, I think I'll wait it out for the new packages to roll out and hopefully some competition to fall in place, then wait for the price drops. :) I'm dreaming ain't I? :(

though clearly it doesn't affect everyone.

Are you using the Netgear WNR2000 Wirless N Router?

My connection keeps dropping back:-

I have removed the Netgear WNR2000 and plugged my cable modem straight into my PC:-

Seems to me there could be an issue with the WNR2000 Wirless N Router.

No, I'm using a Juniper firewall but have also tried the cable modem straight into my PC and my laptop and I'm seeing the same issues. I've heard pretty mixed reports about the router so have avoided using it until now :)

It might be worth trying your modem hooked straight up to the PC for a while - I did manage to download 60GB at full speed before it started cocking up. Sometimes a reboot of the cable modem will fix it for me .. for a few minutes.

Called support, apprently there is something wrong with the DOCSIS file on my modem, it's incorrectly setting some parameters and refusing to update them, they are sending out an engineer with a new modem this afternoon.

Yeah it's weird and it doesn't affect everyone, but for those it does affect, you're pretty much screwed. I've read of a lot of people having this exact same issue, some of who have now had it happen for months. Not once have I heard of anyone getting a resolution to this problem.

You'll probably find that while you're downloading at rubbish speeds, your connection will be slow to everything else, web pages will load slowly or time out etc. If you do some simple ping tests, you'll probably find you're getting a lot of timeouts there too.

Can somebody on the 20Mbps service do a tracert for me to compare to mine:-

C:\Users\Jo>tracert ssl-eu.astraweb.com

I like the way they're shafting the customers they have had for the long run.

We've been with them since the Blueyonder days. Having just looked on their website I've seen the following:

£5 a month for the first 3 months.
£14 a month after that

The above deal is for the upto 10mb service & the unlimited talk weekends package.

Yet I think I'm paying £18p/m + line rental for 2mb internet. What a joke.

Way to go VM. Bravo. This is making me think twice about staying with them now.
