Seem to have a few more hops than others, although the first one is my network of course.

Called support again, they are pretty much insistant that if you can download from gamefiles.virginmedia.com at 50Mbps there isn't a problem

When I had the 20Mbps service both Giganew and Astraweb would run flat out when not in STM, either the DOCSIS 3 network is FUBAR or there is something fishy going on.

I wonder if we could be seeing application throttling for USENET and SSL over a certain bandwidth threshold!

That said my Astraweb conneciton is currently flying along ATM :D

When downloading flatout you do get pretty close to the upload limit of the connection.

Yeah I have an Astraweb account. Will swap my gateway over to the Virgin connection and see if it's still screwed today :)

Edit: Ok I'm seeing 6000KB/sec at the moment. I bet it doesn't last long though.

Edit 2: Ah there it goes ;) Once again around 700KB/sec with really bad packet loss, awesome.

If it can and does work at 50Mb then it's probably not the physical connection.

So either your router is doing something odd, the local UBR is buggered, you're getting a broken config file or some kind of mysterious traffic management is in place.

If they can't and don't fix it go back to 10/20. You only need 50 for pirating anyway. :P

It is the connection somehow. I've used two routers, three PCs (all with clean installs of Windows and of course had the cable modem plugged into the PCs directly. The fact that MANY other people are having the same issues suggests it is something Virgin's side somewhere. It just amazes me that this is a widespread issue and they seemingly have absolutely no idea what's causing it.

I have ADSL2+ which is syncing at 20mbit ish and that connection is absolutely perfect with no stupid random packet loss. Luckily I can just cancel the 50mbit altogether without worrying about downtime/what speeds I'll get etc.

I like the way they're shafting the customers they have had for the long run.

We've been with them since the Blueyonder days. Having just looked on their website I've seen the following:

£5 a month for the first 3 months.
£14 a month after that

The above deal is for the upto 10mb service & the unlimited talk weekends package.

Yet I think I'm paying £18p/m + line rental for 2mb internet. What a joke.

Way to go VM. Bravo. This is making me think twice about staying with them now.

Have you tried contacting VM and asking if they can bring your package up to date? I think this sort of thing happens with many companies. I know it happened to my parents, and took them a while to upgrade their connection automatically.

How many is MANY?

Check the VM newsgroups - various new threads of the same issue crop up virtually every day, as well as various threads on cableforum. I couldn't put a figure on it, but this is not an isolated incident ;)

Nothing new appears in my modem logs either - last entry is from Wednesday. It's quite strange.

To be fair, this is normal these days, as consumers if we want the best deals and prices we need to keep our eye on the ball. A perfect example would be having a savings account for five years and expecting a market leading interest rate, it's just not going to happen. I've also been with them since the blueyonder days and have phoned up a few times over the years and easily got much better deals.

Just give them a call, threaten to cancel and I'm sure they will give you a better price. Also might pay to check your e-mails, most people have been e-mailed regarding the 2mb upgrade, that or log into your virgin account using your blueyonder e-mail details. There may be an upgrade link in there.

if its anything like mine was, for 7 days on my 50mbit , i was gettin around 3 - 15, ended up being a ubr problem (after 4 tech visits) , out of hours had to do and, even tho they said they didnt find a problem, my connection is now maxxed all time. avg 52 - 53mbit

pic (download from giganews @ ssl 20 connections):

(ignore the 70mbit spike, not sure where thats from)

Yeah there is no traffic management on the 50mbit connection. The issue I have is definitely a fault somewhere as the traffic management should just reduce speed, it should never introduce packet loss.
