Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Just saw that I'm out of contact with the oompf bundle in 3 weeks. Has any existing customers had any luck at upgrading to volt at the rate for new customers? I get I'll have to go through the cancellation sing and dance, but just looking at what limitations I'll be looking at.

Here's my story.. I negotiated a new price on my current M500 package, took out an o2 SIM a few days later, called Virgin, they converted my package to a Volt package and doubled my broadband to 1gig for free.. It was surprisingly easy to negotiate a new contract, they dropped from £54 to £45 right from the go - I didnt bother trying to get them down more.

Link aggregation with the Hub4 still seems "iffy".

It seems to work sometimes but others my speed seems capped around 950mb which is too coincidental and feels like it's not aggregating sometimes.

I know there used to be a problem with the Hub4 where the aggregation would fail after a while but I'd heard that had been fixed.

Mine hasn't given me any issues yet. Are you using all 4 ports or just 2?

Just two.

I've reverted back to non-aggregated for the moment. Had some other weird issues which I wasn't sure were related so figured I'd drop back to 'standard' mode for now and check all is well before trying again.

I have two potential hardware solutions. One is my current pfSense box which is a Qotom mini-PC thing with four Intel gigabit ports. This has the benefit of being very low power (about 10W) but is a slightly more complex config as I have to use aggregation on both sides, round-robin for the WAN to the Hub4 and LACP for the LAN side to my core switch. The alternative is a Dell R210II which has a 10GbE NIC in it so I can use the two built-in gigabit ports for the WAN side and then a single 10Gb link to the switch. Simpler but the downside is this box sucks about 60W of juice. With prices going the way they are, an extra 50W 24/7 adds up.

With both I seem to get this 'flakiness' where sometimes my speed caps at about 950Mb which, as I said, is too coincidental not to be the aggregation failing and it only using one port.

I'll experiment with it again when I have the time and patience but it's not that big a deal really. The most I ever saw in aggregated mode was just over 1100Mb and the extra 150Mb doesn't really make that much difference at the end of the day.

I've just spoken to virgin media about getting a price reduction or more speed for little to no extra cost.

I got a grumpy guy that just automatically told me to cancel, so I did.

My current deal (that I managed to get last year) is 350Mb for £31 per month.

I would be happy to keep that price or for them to offer me 500Mb.

Just sharing my experience with virgin :)

We were supposed to have VM installed 3 weeks ago but it turns out that the under street trunking feeding our house is blocked so they need to dig up the street (right on the end of my neighbour's drive!). Two separate engineers had a go at getting the line through and both failed so they need a council permit to complete the external works. My understanding was that this could take 6-8 weeks so I knew that the revised install date of this Friday was unlikely to happen.

We had a call yesterday and they have now rescheduled the internal work to 8th April . That will be almost 3 months since we placed the original order and at this moment in time, they can't confirm whether the council permit is actually going to be in place by then. I would go elsewhere but as it stands, VM is our only option for anything faster than the 32Mb FTTC connection we currently have plus my partner works for VMO2 so we get it cheap.

We still have our existing Plusnet connection which is now out of contract so we will be paying substantially more than we were but VM have offered to send us a 4G dongle/hub (no idea what it will be but apparently there is no charge to use it) although I suspect this might not be as reliable as the existing Plusnet FTTC connection. I'm guessing this is to keep us sweet so we don't complain/ask for compensation.

Does anyone know what it is they will supply us with and whether it is even worth taking it out of the box?

I've just been though 6 days of hell with Virgin CS, I've finally managed to revert back to my M500 service from Volt2 1GigE in my 14 day cooling off period.

This is the summary I sent to a Virgin Manager (when they finally called)

It took 6 days to fix my issue, I tried calling in and use Whatsapp, I was fobbed off, hung up on and generally lied to by numerous agents.

All I wanted to do was to revert to my previous contact during my 14 day cooling off period. I was told this was no longer available and I’d have to now pay £99 up from £45!!

In the end I was left with no option but to cancel all my services with Virgin Media. Even though I purchased through a Volt 2 bundle I’ve been told I’ll now have to call 02 in order to cancel my SIM (probably wasting countless more hours on hold)

I've not had to call CS in probably 5 years but it's fair to say it's not changed one bit  (caveat emptor)

Just signed up with Community Fibre. To be honest, I would have stayed with VM if they'd offered me a good deal. Oh well.

<Overly dramatic mode !>No good calling me in a couple of days - this ship has sailed.</:o:p:D>

Well I dumped VM completely and my main connection is via 5G these days and it puts VM services to shame for uptime, and quality of service and price. I am unsure what 4G modem they'll give you but why not try it, you could be pleasantly surprised.

The 4G unit arrived and it's basically their standard issue Huawei Mifi unit which looks like it could be a great portable option but not usable for a home network that runs off predominantly Unifi kit and is mostly hard wired. There is no hard wire option with the Huawei.

They've sent us a 5G enabled SIM but 5G isn't available in our area yet so it will fallback to 4G. I did a quick speedtest last night and got 70Mbps download an around 7Mbps upload which is better than our FTTC connection which tops out at 32Mbps/9Mbps but to make it usable, I would need to buy a 4G/5G router (5G for future proofing but on a quick search, 5G modems are still really expensive).

Can anyone recommend anything appropriate? I don't need wifi or anything fancy because it will basically be put straight into modem only mode to feed my internal network but I do want something that has the best chance of a good signal and provides a solid and reliable connection.

For 4G only look for a used B535 from Huawei, or if you want the best 4G option you can get a B818-263 for £100 from Vodafone but you need to spend £30 for a single month SIM only to get the £100 price. ZTE do a decent 5G modem router at ~£250 but I've not had a chance to try one IRL yet, it is on my to do list. We have a dedicated 5G thread, that will accept 4G noobs too. :p

Got say not impressed with the service, haven't had any drops, but nothing streams in 4K anymore on my 100/10 connection. Never had an issue with my Vodafone setup, what a load of rubbish. 18 months of ***** now.

Speedtest doesn't reflect real experience.

You're impressed, but cannot stream 4k on a 100 Mbps connection? Not sure if I follow.

VM absolutely do prioritise traffic Speedtest sites.

How long have you had the service ?

Highest quality rate I can get without buffering is 720p

3 Weeks, so outside of the 14 days. I'll give them a call later and then just trash their facebook area on a daily basis.

My 60/20 Vodafone service way way better

I'm running it in modem mode, so separate firewall, switches and APs. None of that changed when I moved services.

Signed up to O2 £6 SIM only two days ago and its tracked already as got email from VM about speed boost & new hub being sent out. Hopefully a SH5, the SH2ac has been faithful the last ~8 years :)

Seems odd as I stream 4K loads and I don't think I have seen it take more than 70Mb when doing it, so you'd think 100Mb would be enough, of course if you have other things going on within the network too 100Mb doesn't give much margin.

Did you update/clear DNS cache etc?
