Virgin Media Discussion Thread

It took a while but virgin finally did come crawling back with a good offer...

Also got this text today as I cancelled recently. Very happy to see the back of VM despite actually having a fairly stable connection. FTTP is just much much better

I dislike VM as much as the next dude. But 100Mb is ample for my needs.

If it was unreliable down this way I'd agree with you.

Found out something irritating about VM Business 4G backup.

So the idea is when the line fails it takes over.

Except no it doesn't. It has to be a specific type of fault approved by VM otherwise it will sit there flashing at you doing nothing when your line is down.

9 hours downtime the other day. Absolute garbage for the simcard based backup to go down with the wired connection.

Wow, that's totally different to the way they sell it on their website:
How does Constant Connect service work?
If the fixed broadband completely cuts out, and loses connectivity to the local CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System), which provides data connectivity to the customer, then the Constant Connect with 4G broadband back-Up will automatically start.
When fixed broadband connectivity is restored, that Constant Connect will switch off, and the router will auto failover back to the fixed broadband connection.

You're better off getting your own SIM and mobile router at that point and handling the failover yourself.

Oh damn, that's looks juicy. We didn't do the cancel trick for this year, so paying ~£63pm. Was going to try again come end of the 1 year but 1GB for under £30 seems great. Can't find their upload speeds though...

Edit - holy ****, the upload speeds are the same as download ?

Contacts can't auto-renew, if you had a 12 month contract that ended in July then you are out of contract now, unless you re-contracted to get a cheaper price than the out of contract rates.

Doh, our VM 12 months falls in July so just gone by. Once you have done 1 year, can you cancel any time or have to wait another year?

If your contract has lapsed then you're just on a 30 day notice period. You can give notice whenever you like.

If you want CommunityFibre then assuming you've checked you are in a servicable area, it's a no brainer to switch.

Yeah supposedly we are. A VM engineer lives on our road so has sorted a good deal before, and despite what looks like a number of disgruntled users in this thread, we have had a pretty good experience in this house. With belt tightening, Community Fibre and much faster upload speeds is an easy switch :).

So jealous, CF would be amazing. Latency, jitter, upload, price, will all be in a different universe than Virgin. Even if their CS are idiots they'll likely be better too.

Wowsers, they don't hang about. Rang the CS team to ask about their cancellation fee and if installation can avoid any down time whilst leaving VM. Someone from their sales team rang me during the initial call , rang him back and he offered 1 year with 5 months free and no set up fee. Plus they will install and turn on before VM would switch off. Impressive.

Is this CommunityFibre you're talking about? And is this for the 1Gb package? That seems miles different to the website offer lol.

So are they offering you a 1 year contract, first 5 months free, then £25pm for the remaining 7 months or what exactly? Seems far too good to be true that lol

Yes, the CommunityFibre 1GB package. The issue with us is I can't guarantee we will be in this rented property for another 2 years, so the 1 year seems the wiser choice annoyingly but this seemed to make him spring into this 'too good to be true' offer.

The sales guy said the offer was only for switching from another ISP rather than say moving into a new home. He didn't say the method of 5 free months, could be a cash back scheme perhaps.

Edit - @Caged thanks, that's what they confirmed.

Regardless that's a stonking deal and I would snap their hands off, especially if it's on a 12m term that suits you.

Worst case scenario is you move and you are only on the hook for half the remaining contract costs:
b) when are in contract with Community Fibre and you are moving to a new address where we do not provide service, you will only be subject to 50% of the cancellation fee if you provide proof of your new address in the form any of the following:
  • A solicitor's letter confirming contracts have been exchanged on a new home
Or
  • A copy of one of the following documents showing your new address; current Council Tax bill, driving licence, utility bill (showing usage), or doctor’s registration letter.
Or
  • A formal lease agreement, provided through an approved letting agency, confirming when your lease is starting and showing that you will be living at the address (page showing details of new address and last page signed by landlord and tenant)

On the phone with Virgin, they're throwing everything at me not to leave. Also rubbished FTTP and CommunityFibre, saying something about the ratio will get worse and won't get the advertised speeds.

Edit - just finished, she was actually quite nice in the end.

Ratio will get worse and you wont get the advertised speeds..

Sounds familiar, or do Virgin not oversubscribe their areas anymore and users have to wait until they're a set amount oversubscribed before Virgin then upgrades the local hardware to cope?

The one I spoke to when cancelling the install was rude and full of lies. A UK based guy rang me today to ask me why I'd cancelled, I explained the billing issue which the agent lied about to say it had been sorted, I then explained the 45 minute phone call and the rude call handler. He asked for the date and time so he can listen to the call and apologised. First bit of decent CS I've had from them throughout the entire process.

She basically wouldn't process the cancellation until I told her who my current provider is. I said I don't have to provide that information, she got rude and said I do and I've only been on the phone for 3 minutes (yes, to her, not the previous agents). This went back and forth and I then explained that there's a cancellation slip in the contract where I don't have to mention provider, she then called me a liar. In the end I just kept repeating 'CANCEL THE ORDER' over and over again and she finally backed down. Wouldn't give me her full name either. Absolutely horrendous, pushy and rude.

My 1gb got activated yesterday hitting around 940mb/s speed does the line take time to hit max speed or will that be my max? using a HUB 5, I am very happy still just curious.

Are you connecting via the 2.5Gb port and wired to a machine also with a 2.5Gb NIC and connecting at that speed?

If not and you're just using a 1Gb NIC on the test device then 940 Mb/s is about the max you'll get due to overheads.
