Virgin Media Discussion Thread

People do love getting into a flap over a few hours without 8nternet.

Id imagine 90% of people were asleep in the hours it was down.

If you base this on being purely residential which considering VM Business put out this statement:

"We’re aware of an issue that is affecting broadband services for Virgin Media Business customers as well as our contact centres."

I was thinking about moving from BT to Virgin to get their 1GB broadband. But my livelihood depends on a reliable internet connection and this has put me off!

I've been with Virgin over 26 years, and reliability isn't one of their faults.

Can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of time they've been down for more than an hour in that time.

People just like to jump on the bandwagon and bash VM, if it isn't FTTP it must be trash, the last outage I noticed was back at the start of covid when demand on the network was struggling I presume.

Really stupid question but I’m looking for some advice.

Moving into a new house in a month or so, during the walk around I found this virgin media outlet.

How exactly do I connect both a router and tv box to this outlet?! It looks like it one has one input?
I’m sure I’m being daft, anyone got any ideas?

It will go to that converter to the router and then from there you can guess where too next.

The new installs go to it's own converter box and from there to the router.
AHHH OK! So from the spare coax port on the right side it goes to my router, then an output from router to the TV Box? What’s with the weird bit looping back in?

I’m going to have to buy a 15ish metre cable as this box is in a stupid place. Any male to male coax cable ok?

They might replace it for a new converter box, they might not. It looks like it might be an extension possibly or it's been put in there out the way by the last owner.

I was going to opt for a self-install. Do you think I should opt for an engineer install if they might replace it?

edit: Just realised there was a coax cable in one of the bedrooms, I wonder if thats the other end of it.

uurgh, on the merry-go-round now, deal from the first guy was just bad, £4.50 off my £9 increase, second guy, we'll cancel your increase for the remaining contract quoting me that I can only get 50Mb from other suppliers in my area. I currently have 500Mb, TV and phone for £47 a month, I have never plugged the phone in and not sure I have ever turned the TV box on so asked about 500Mb only.... £48, a pound more than I pay for everything, so I did the next step and cancelled.
For those who cancelled was it a case of just waiting for a call back, or did you have to chase ?
So in answer to my own question, VM retentions called me earlier (although I missed the call) just hope they calll back.

I have to say, other than this morning I have found the service generally good.

@ approx 1:30am I spent 30+ minutes triaging why my internet access went down only to find out it was my ISP again.

Everything checked out on my end, but I was fixated that it might be a router config issue.
Reset to defaults and I was still not getting any inet access either via IP or URL.
Started to get the rage, the missus will be up in a few hours to do work stuff and I really didn't want to be in that blast radius.

Big Brain Genius me finally checked twitter on my phone to see the clusterf of tweets from people having he same issues.
Big Brain Genius me had also changed, and saved in browser, the login details for my router after resetting to defaults.
Big Brain Genius me tried restoring the previously backed up router config.
Big Brain Genius me had forgotten what those details were.

I managed to get a basic, usable setup sorted around 3:30am to minimise the hassle my missus would have when she started work.
Few hours kip, wake up around 9:45 without any bruises or stab wounds meaning the Doomsday Device did not activate which was nice.
Spent the past 2+hrs finishing up my DHCP resvs., Vlans, Ports etc etc

Didn't really want to spend a morning of my week off sorting this out but hey, at least the doomsday clock has been reset.

Can't wait for the fibre gang to finish the install in my area, chatted with them yesterday and they said sometime this month.
