Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Would there be any reason not to have a Hub 5 mounted horizontally? It’s in modem mode. Maybe ventilation but it doesn’t seem like it gets that warm. Was thinking of getting a tray or cable organiser that’s big enough and mounting it under the desk.

The hubs don't do as much work in modem mode so don't get that hot anyway.

If there was any concern about heat then a small USB fans with rubber feet next to it would sort it - I do this with a couple of devices on a rack shelf that would otherwise get quite toasty and they run very cool.

I'm still shaking my head at Virgin. They said on phone about being £4 more than prior to my call and updated it as £2 more on the website. They really are amusing.

BRSK haven't got back to me yet so no news is good news, but my flat is 2nd floor and quite high up so expecting issues to arise.

and begs the question from anyone that can answer. Can they(BRSK) run the fiber cable from my flat to where it is being connected rather than where it is connected to my flat? This looks like what Nynex would have done back in the day with regards to this flat, I'm assuming with how their cable isn't secured really high up.

No I dont think they can do this, but I wouldnt worry, im on the 3rd floor of a maisonette about 20 foot up, and they didnt have any issues installing mine, they will discuss with you where you want the ONT installed and then drill a hole through the wall inside to outside, they then fit the fibre cable to the telegraph pole, and droop the rest of the cable across the floor, then they drill a large steel hook into the outside of your wall and pull the cable taut and thread it through the steel hook they just fitted a few times, as there would be nothing else between the ONT installed in your property and the telegraph pole to stop the cable getting ripped out of the ONT on a windy day for instance, they then push the cable through the hole they drilled in the wall and fit a white plastic plate to your internal wall, which they wrap the excess cable around, finally fit a plug to the cable and plug it into the ONT.

Just to make you aware, as soon as they had finished, mine sort of went live, it did and it didnt, the engineer didnt understand it, then about 2 mins later I got an email stating they were going to take a part month payment from my bank account, as soon as that went my services went live.

I could be wrong, maybe they can work the other way around, inside to outside to the pole.

Cheers for Info. I thought it would likely (99.9%) be 1 way install, myself from some vids I watched on YT.

I'll try not to worry about it and likely 35 to 40 feet up as an old Victorian building. It was that my landlord said won't they need a lift to get that high and that threw me off a little or I wouldn't even pondered it.

Not much of a discussion to be had about the ONT as I need it where Nynex/Virgin is installed as both rigs based near there location wise and best place to drill. Not one for change if I can help it.

Noted on the payment being taken. I think my first partial payment bill date is on the 16th, but I'll take it as when it goes live so got no surprises. I do have the info, but not going to look right now.

My Son is waiting to see how it goes with me as he looking for better connection for his family. He was considering Zen Fiber, I believe.

Can't wait to get it installed and do the Virgin bye bye dance!

Anyone had a good deal from O2/Virgin? Going to be looking for a new phone in Jan, have VM at home but not happy with where the prices have gone for being a "loyal" customer

The engineer that visited me did have a very long ladder, really nice guy and easy to get along with, he did say to me if push came to shove they would just get a cherry picker out, I replied "That easy" and he simply said Yep !

As others have said, the difference is night and day, saying bye bye to VM was the best move I ever did, they have some serious competition to deal with now.

That's the one! Cherry Picker. Excellent. Long ladders sounds great. I'd expect many third party installers to be as well equipped.

The Sales guy was decent for BRSK and did state that he thought that Virgin was trying to get whatever they could money wise before they had to actually truly compete on same level price wise. I had a reasonable conversation with him. He asked on 2nd or 3rd call, have we discussed TV and just said I watch YT and don't even have an aerial in TV. Quick convo, no pressure.

I may grab a static IP, but I'll cross that bridge when come to it.

You'd think virgin would try to compete now to retain customers.

Hi all, my M250 contract ends mid Feb. I made the call to re-negotiate just before Christmas and took up the 1gig service for 18 months (retentions offered me a good discount). The new super hub just arrived by courier. However, after doing more research, I have decided to switch to a CityFibre FFTP provider instead as it's now available on my street. What is the best way to cancel the new Virgin Media contract and just revert to the remaining weeks of my old contract? I have not even opened the box/activated, so I imagine I will have to arrange to have this new hub sent back. I was going to reject delivery, however Yodel just rang the doorbell, left the box on my front doorstep and bolted!

I'm not positive but wouldn't you fall under the 14 day cooling of period for the new contract? If so you could deal with it that way. If it exists. You'd still be required to fulfill the current contract until feb then give 30 days notice once it ends. I'm not sure how you'd deal with the new hub. First thing I'd do is look at new contract to see if a cooling period exists.

That's not how it works. You can give notice before the contract end date, with the minimum being 30 days. VM systems will allow up to 60 days notice.

The contract does indeed include a 14 day cooling off period. I understand and expect that I will have to honour the end of my existing contract until the 15-Feb of course. I was hoping to avoid a call to VM customer service and be able to do all this online.

Ah. I did not realise that. Thanks for correcting me.

I thought once I had BRSK installed on 3rd Jan I'd have to wait until 14th Jan to end it as that is when contract fully ended. so Virgin on 16th December said I'd have to pay an early disconnection fee. I had a bill via email on the 25th since though for a higher amount. Once BRSK installed I'm on phone the next day getting rid of it.

That's good that you can serve 60 days notice! So it looks like I will have to call up customer service, cancel my new contract under the 14 day cooling off period and then also serve my notice for my previous contract, and finally arrange to send the new (and possibly old) router(s) back to VM. I'm dreading this call, it's going to be a painful process!

Let us know how the dreaded call ends up. I really hate talking to them. I'd be interested in hearing especially what happens with the notice period and contract ending feb.

So reading my Last bill

Your package includes your standard monthly bundle / package cost, plus any promotions and discounts applied. This month they cover your advanced month from 4 January.

so my contract end date falls within this.

Apparently we can order FTTP via Virgin Media now, according to their website. Nexfibre (network provider not an ISP) installed their FTTP network here in July 2024.

My dad wants to know - can Virgin Media install the external and internal FTTP boxes under the damp course? The damp course is a 2nd lower layer of bricks, designed to provide insulation from damp. It looks something like this:

These bricks are very important to him . I think he worries about damaging the insulation of the house, if a whole is drilled through the wall, above the damp course.

He says that he would construct a ‘trap door’ in the floorboards, to allow a cable to be installed below the floorboards.

Would the install engineers be even remotely likely to consider such a request? They are third party contractors, I’ve heard.

Or, do they insist on doing it a specific way, e.g. with the internal FTTP box / faceplate installed above the floorboard level?

We will be getting FTTP via Openreach, most likely at some point in 2026, would they likely insist on a typical install as well?

I’m worried he is just gonna say no to the whole thing tbh, despite the crappiness of our 40mbps FTTC line.

Drilling externally from the DPC I'd say would be too low to the ground. However, if he wants to put his own route into the house from where they bring the fibre in - I wouldn't have thought the engineer would mind. Although it will likely vary from engineer and how they interpet their own rules/guidance.

I'm not sure why your dad is asking for it below the DPC though, that's to stop damp from the ground rising up the walls and damaging etc. Drilling a hole that's then sealed for a cable will not have any bearing on the DPC. I'm sure there are plenty of other holes around the house for other things!

Well I've been having a chat with him just now.

He is worried about damaging the exterior house wall (mostly just how that would impact the appearance), but he thinks that drilling his own hole for the fibre cable, from outside to the inside would be the best option, because then you can just plaster over any damage/ cracks on the inside wall.

I think going below the damp course is not a great idea, so hopefully he won't do that...

I've told him we should try to do it as simply as possible (not plan for future fibre cables from other providers, not planning for future fibre cables from other providers with a rope pulling system for the garden, and so on), so I hope he will agree.

For future ISPs, I assume you can just use the same single hole in the wall, remove any previous wall boxes etc, and get them to install in the same place. My dad does not want lots of holes in the wall basically...
