Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Not an issue I've ever heard of but thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.

They are not actually that bad. I've had them more than twice that bad, and not seen any problems with internet access.

Not
The speed test was done wirelessly, but with no other devices using the wireless and the laptop is barely a couple of yards from the router with clear line of sight.

You need to check with a cable. VM won't get someone out based on low wireless speeds, because there are too many variables and issues with wireless drivers. You need to check directly via a LAN cable to exclude any of those issues and prove the problem is on the network.

What program are you using to get those download stream readings from?

Speedtest is from speedtest.net

The other two are screengrabs from his superhub/superhub2. If you have either, you login, click on Advanced Settings, then find Network Status. Those will be in that page.

By default the superhub is at http://192.168.0.1 and the login details are on the sticker at the bottom.

do as Steampunk says and also put the Superhub into modem mode whilst doing the speedtests so only you are connected via ethernet.

If you still have speed problems post your results over on the VM forums and am sure they will sort you out.

Is that what you think it might be?, i should mention i have the superhub in modem mode as i use an ASUS RT-N56U as the wireless router as the superhub is rubbish for wireless.

I just did a speedtest, and whilst the speed started off at the full 120 it quickly decreased to around 60, and the slow decreased even more to 35 i actually stopped the test after a couple of minutes as it never finished, the below picture was take about 2 minutes after the test started.....

You can see from the above picture that the speed started off at full speed and then rapidly decrease, what on earth is going on here

Have you tried running the speed test in safe mode?

Well I am thinking of buying an Asus Router and PCI-E wireless to add to the Superhub.

I have poor ping/lag on some online games via wireless, and can't even enjoy HD content on youtube or Netflix via wireless. I currently have a 120 Mbps package, and get 53.63Mbps via wireless with an 11.7 Mbps upload.

It has been like this since upgrading to the 120Mbps package and Superhub many moons ago. In fact, I am getting worse online game performance via wireless with the Superhub, than I did with the old D-link router previous. And no difference in speed.

Gaming via wireless is always going to be subject to latency and packet loss. It is the nature of wireless as a radio medium.

Only thing that is going to solve that is a wired connection to your router

Even though it was better with the previous D-Link router?

Currently I require a wireless connection.

Yep. My experience is exactly the same.

I still have my D-Link. Put DD-WRT on it and use it as a WiFi Access Point, WiFi is tight as a nut all round the house. WiFi pings to the superhub used to be over 80ms. Pings to my DD-WRT D-Link are sub 1ms. Ran the test one at a time (unplugging the other one from mains) using the same WiFi channel.

The Superhub is fundamentally broken by design and shouldn't even have left the design phase. Amazingly Virgin Media admitted this yet refused to give me a working model because they never advertised WiFi

Yeah, the D-Link is definitely better at WiFi.

If you need gigabit LAN, put the D-Link into Access Point mode and disable WiFi on the Superhub. Then you can have quality tested WiFi from your D-Link and the Gigabit wired switch on your Superhub. Best of both worlds.

Why Virgin Media insist on cramming all their crap into one crap device, I have no idea. It's not super and its not even a hub lol.

Mostly marketing reasons, because BT have the Homehub. They then stripped it down so that they script monkeys in the offshore call centres could easily support it.

Both Superhubs are basically lowest common denominator by design, primarily just for marketing purposes.

hmmm, how on earth do you gain access to the SuperHub when its in modem mode and using a Wireless router as well??, i thought the default IP when in modem mdoe was, 192.168.100.1 but that doesnt appear to work. I can gain access to my Asus Wireless Router but not sure how i gain access to the SuperHub??

Anyone else VM connection been playing up the last couple of days!?. I just seem to be getting rubbish speed sporadically, where webpages will take ages to load and youtube stops buffering the clip im watching.

All the lights on the SuperHub are as they should be and im not completely losing connection as the little network icon in the task bar isnt showing a yellow exclamation mark or red cross, so not sure whats up!?

Yep, all over the place, has been for a week or so. I'm not far from you, must be a network issue.

You should let the test finish. It will provide a link to an image at the end of the test. Have you tried more than one speedtest.net server?

Well im speed seem to be the full 120Mbps today, but im using NewsBin atm and it only reporting between 41-50Mbps, so not sure whats up with that if SpeedTest says im getting 120+Mbps. I almost always got the full speed from NewsBin in the past so not sure why im not now.......unless Virgin Media have started network shaping newsgroups now????

Usenet has been shaped for a long time.

You should use 3-4 threads, SSL & port 443 for the best results.

Well up until last week i was still getting the full 120Mbps download speed, so i dont think its that...maybe its a problem with AstraWeb who i used for my downloads

EDIT: Just tried one of the AstraWeb SSL servers and my speeds gone down to 7Mbps now

EDIT2: Ok, ive just change the connections from 4 (as suggested above, the default is 8 usually) to 48 and now im getting the full 120Mbps download speed, strange that ive never had to change the connections from the default 8 in the past in order to get full speed from NewsBin

i think they are saying about the green graphic being all over the place. when the test finish and get the link it didn't show the graphic which the graphic shows the stableness of the speed...

thinkbroadband speedtest does show the graphic when the test is finished

Usenet has been shaped by VM for several years now. That's in addition to STM (which is twelve hours a day on weekends). It's quite possible to be hit by shaping and STM at the same time whilst downloading from news servers.
