Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well up until last week i was still getting the full 120Mbps download speed, so i dont think its that...maybe its a problem with AstraWeb who i used for my downloads

EDIT: Just tried one of the AstraWeb SSL servers and my speeds gone down to 7Mbps now

EDIT2: Ok, ive just change the connections from 4 (as suggested above, the default is 8 usually) to 48 and now im getting the full 120Mbps download speed, strange that ive never had to change the connections from the default 8 in the past in order to get full speed from NewsBin

GMT : late Sun/ early Mon Astra does server maintenance every week, it can get real slow for a while.

Change to USA servers or wait an hour or 2.

You don't need 48 connections. Unless you have like 1000+ files queued which are all less than a MB each.

For large part binaries you need no more than 16. I use 12, and also use Astraweb with 120Mb.

The best usenet service I've experienced on VM is their own service provided by Highwinds. Speed is always super stable. Unfortunately no SSL and 30 days retention.

Yay. Just got an email saying

"We're supercharging your broadband – and it's on the house. Your broadband will go from up to 60Mb to up to 100Mb"

Typed my postcode. "Your speed supercharge is coming! We’re upgrading the network in your area and your speed supercharge will be ready between August 2014 and January 2015. You don’t need to do a thing and we’ll contact you as soon as it’s ready." Currently paying £25 pm for 60MB broadband only.

Very nice indeed! :) I wonder if the upload speed will increase from 3Mbps and if I'll get given a superhub 2.

The Email tells you nothing new that you could not see months ago if you signed into "My Virgin Media".

And no the upload is not going up at same time, possibly later.

I will be on 152/12 not 152/15.

Just got the same email and when I clicked the link, it said that they'd contact me by the end of March 2014 to confirm that the new speed is ready. Woop.

I thought it was going to be doubled to 120mbit..

Something up with Virgin. Ours has gone to ****. Was downloading and streaming on Friday night, after a while it acted as if it had been throttled. Since then our speeds have been atrocious, just done a Speedtest; 0.39 Mb down and 1.63 Mb up (we are on the 60 Mb package).

This is getting ridiculous. I came home last and the internet was fine, as soon the football started it became non existent. Speedtest came to 0.6 MB down and 1.1 Mb up. I know week day evenings get a bit busy but surely not this bad?

Internet was down yesterday from 17:51 until around 21:09. The service status page stated a fix time of 22:00 so while it was a bummer to have a fault in the area at least they fixed it ahead of the proposed time. I had to reboot the superhub for it to sync back up though so didn't do that until later when I caught wind of someone else local having internet again as I was expecting 22:00...

What cheap (around £20) router do people recommend for use with the superhub to increase wireless range and speed?

Ive not got a very big flat, but the range doesn't quite reach the bathroom

I'll be getting the "free" upgrade to 100Mb, so it will need to cope with this speed, cheers!

I read somewhere (sometime ago) that you have to clone the superhub's mac address when using your own router, other wise you don't get the best performance. Do you still have to do this?

I have an Asus N66U on 100Mb and sometimes it can feel a little sluggish.

Where did you hear that? You've never needed to do that. Put it in modem only mode, connect router. Nothing more to it.

Just add a wireless access point or extender!

I just love how they say the supercharge will be 'on the house' when blatantly a few months after the rollout the monthly fees will be increased and then 6 months again it will be increased again. They did it the last 2 times when my speeds went from 30 to 60.

152mb down but 12mb up? Isn't that a little off. Is increasing the upload bandwidth a huge task to undergo and more expensive to implement? I have no knowledge of this what so ever but be interested to know why the upload in a lot of other countries is significantly higher than most ISPs in the UK

It's depressing isn't it, I am currently in Romania and the guy I am working with has 100mb in both directions and pays 50Lei a month (about £10) and its fibre!!

I have 152Mb down and around 15Mb up.... It's all pointless with the stupid usage caps Virgin have and they only do it to say "We are the fastest again"....
