Virgin Media Discussion Thread

This happens to me too but not as frequently. Wifi will suddenly drop. Although it seems to be the 5GHz radio that goes, the 2.4GHz is usually available. Happens maybe once a week or once a fortnight.

Its both that happens to mine, usually the 5ghz light goes dim, and the 2.4ghz goes bright and dont flash, nor can any device access the net :( im gonna have to wait till it happens again and ring them, even though the first thing they tell me to do will be reboot it which fixes it :(.

Well he tried one but for some reason it wouldn't activate with one so now he's gone back go a SH2.

I doubt they'll be much difference with the awful WiFi range of them.

I can tell you its better even in non AC mode for speed and distance. ;)

Downside the LED's cannot be dimmed like the SH2 so far (unsure if the hardware is still intact or its down to firmware) PIA for me as I set my SH2 to LOW and SH2AC is MED.

I'd be getting the electrical tape out again for that. Had to do it with the SH1 and the SH2 dimming was a godsend.

Couldn't get the SH2AC on the network so stuck with the SH2 now. Which is still **** for wireless range.

Yes I got you above stating that, I am telling your the SH2AC is better (I Beta tested it), wonder if he did not know it can be automatically activated (info is in the box).

Quick question, just ordered Virgin for my mum (replacing her crap Plusnet connection). Went for just 50Mb and Unlimited XL phone. Had an email through from Plusnet saying blah blah we're sorry your moving your phone line and leaving us. Does this mean that Virgin will be using the BT phone line we've already got for the phone and cable for the internet? And if so will that mean we won't be charged a cessation fee for leaving Plusnet?

That's what I thought, we used to have Telewest for internet and phone (Will they even need to put new wiring in?). I guess I can expect a £30 cessation charge from Plusnet for leaving the BT network then.

Sorry, these cessation fees are nonsense! Is your mum outside the specified contract with Plus Net? If so, tell them to do one if they try and charge you anything for leaving them, exactly what I will be doing when I leave my present ISP..

My understanding is that the cessation charge is one passed on from BT for disconnecting a phone line. It's up to ISPs to either pass it on or absorb (same as the initial connection charge). She is outside of her contract though.

Virgin media 152mb operating at it's finest.

Having nothing but constant problems with it now. I have cancelled my direct debit and refused to pay until they can give me what I'm paying for.

They keep booking an engineer but then auto cancel it the next day with an automated message telling me everything is ok..

Useless oversubscribed crap.

Our 30Mb connection is playing up as well. Had an outage last night as well.

AFAIK the cessation charge is for the broadband not the line.

If you login into the Plusnet member area and look at the account summary you should be able to see whether there's a potential cessation charge against the account.

Plusnet's information is here http://portal.plus.net/support/customer_service/billing/cessation_charges.shtml.

It says "Activated", but then that page you linked to says that:

Code:
Cessation charges don't apply if:

You use a MAC key to switch to another provider (this is called a migration)
You're a customer without a contract on any of the following products:
        Plusnet Essentials
        Unlimited
        Unlimited Fibre
        Unlimited Fibre Extra

And we're out of contract for Unlimited Broadband.

I guess both could have to be true i.e. transferring with a MAC key and out of contract?

gotta love virgin sometimes.

Swapped over from sky to virgin last month on their premier collection.
Multi room, tiro, sky sports, HD, 100mb, XL TV etc for £84pm.

Just this second phoned to add the sky sports season ticket and to obtain this i needed the big kahuna package. Internet to 152mb. Thinking this would add extra to my package it actually dropped by £4pm. remove the season ticket and i'm paying £54pm for 10 months. Not a bad deal in my opinion at all

Anyone know what the situation is with getting the cable from the street to the house itself?

I never really considered this, but it seems they need to get a cable from the little CATV box in the pavement up to the house.

Surely if there's a yard/driveway that it needs to get by in needs to be laid into the ground, it can't just run exposed, can it?

My landlord said if it's to be done right then a small trench needs to be dug in the yard between the road and the wall of the house with a conduit pipe to protect the cable.

Will the virgin engineer do this? It's probably about 40ft from the pavement box to where it would first touch the wall of the house.

Also, it seems that they put a brown box on the outside of the wall.

Is this required or can it go straight through the wall and just have a box on the inside of the house? If it must be on the outside, is it possible to get a different colour box, like white? As the brown will look awful agains the white painted wall and I know my landlord wont like it.

If there is a yard/driveway, they normally run it along the side in conduit to the house and then up the wall to the brown box. This is how all the ones in my area are.

Well after getting an almighty scare with the engineer making noises about needing help to install, then not being sure if I had permission from the landlord (He actually got quite animated/borderline aggressive when I explained Virgin themselves wouldn't have sent him without it, as they reminded me about 500 times), he muttered and grumbled a lot and just put it in anyway. Unnecessary theatrics but sod it, now I have fibre :D

They will pull it up the trench under the pavement that they dug when they put cable in the street. Then up your garden to the house.

It can run exposed, much as a TV aerial cable can. They can pin it to a wall, run it in a plastic protective tube that runs along your wall or is buried under the ground.

I've got mine in a tube pinned to the wall as it was intended to go under the ground and we never bothered in the end. My neighbours just have it clipped to their walls.

Yes, they will do this. They have teams that do the digging up and pulling of cables down the street, and then the guy who comes and connects thing ups and activates the boxes.

You need a box on the outside. It's usually brown, but they put white ones on the inside, so you can ask. If not, you can just paint the outside box, as long as you don't block up the screwheads.
