Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I cancelled Sky TV this month as I could basically get a new customer 6 months half-price deal on the Big Kahuna with Sports and Movies bundle VM offer (already had 152MB BB and phoneline with them).

Sky didn't put any effort into keeping me, but as above, I got a phonecall afterwards to see if they could do anything. I politely declined as the VM guy had literally just fitted my TiVo box. In fact he was still sat in his van outside :p

I don't know why both companies do that. Offer a deal, don't wait till I've spent time and effort sorting out a replacement before calling and offering me a something better.

It's like those insurance companies that hike your renewal, and only offer a better price once you've called to cancel because you searched for a better deal elsewhere.

How hard is it for these companies to understand that the first step of keeping your customers is to not have them looking around for a better deal because they are pleased with your prices and service?

Just changed my contract and they came with a new superhub again,

this is Superhub 2AC.. is that the new test one or whatever? :) on settings it supports the 1,300 MB wireless for devices that allow etc

Seems decent so far.

Do I not need my asus rtn56u you reckon? could sell it?

The modems perform better in modem mode with a 3rd party router. So that would be better unless the performance difference doesn't matter, or you really want the cash.

Back with VMG again now

Taken just now, its absolutely rock solid. So happy :)

Whens the next speed increases due does anyone know ;)

i always thought in vm that your upload was 10% of your download.

when i was on 120mb i had 12mb/s up and it is the same on 152.

im paying £18.50 a month for 50mb standalone no phone or tv

I'm paying £25 for just broadband at 60mb and had a letter today telling me it's increasing by £1.50 in october. They seem to increase it once a year as my last increase was last october.

Am I paying too much then for my BB? I appreciate they're going to give me a free speed increase soon to 100mb, but I'd rather pay £18.50 right now for 50mb instead of £26.50 for 60mb.

On NTL/TW-BY/VM you were never on 20/12.

12Mb/s UL only became avail on the newest 152/12 tier AFAIR, before that it was 120/10Mb/s and before that 100/10 or 100/5, I cannot remember 100% if it was ever 120/12.

The speeds vary as it depended on if your area had already received the 100Mb/s upgrade then the UL Speed upgrade then the 120Mb/s upgrade then the latest 152Mb/s upgrades.

I was 100/5 then 100/10 then 120/10 (???120/12???) now 152/12.

The lower tiers were same ratio.

I cannot remember all my tiers since 2001 till now and may have some errors above but nobody had 20/12 ever unless some kind of business account I know little about.

I think he meant 20/2 not 20/12. ;)

I went from 50/5 to 100/10 to 120/12 (or 11.7 as they state) and now I'm on 152/12. I have a feeling they may go to 152/15 but time will tell.

I had 60/3 for ages, but now 152/12

When they doubled the download for free, they didn't double the upload. So I was only getting 20:1 not 10:1. In fact I then got 100 free upgrade, and I still had 3 upload I think, so 100/3

It was only when I went to the brand new package, 152 with the Big Kahuna, that I got the faster upload.

Yes, they tried to do this to me when I went to 100 and keep my upload at 5. I had to make quite a few calls to get them to change it to 10 upload.

I understand why they would want to keep people on as low as possible upload that they can get away with. It's the upload that puts the strain on the network the way it is designed. It was not designed to cater for people to have their P2P clients seeding at 100% for the duration that there computers are on. Most people are not even aware how much their upload is being used.

I understand but still deplore the situation.

Called up last week to try and get the big Kahoona for 35 for 12 months but no joy, they would only offer it for 3 months then 45 after that.

Got a letter through the post this morning offering it for 12 months at 35.

Why not just give it to me in the first place!

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong please?
Even though I have other NNTP sources I thought I would give Virgins News Servers a go but I'm having no luck.
In the authentication box do I put my email and password that I would get my email with?

Anything else I might have done wrong?

Don't put anything in the login/password section (untick "server requires login"). VM's servers are outsourced to Highwinds and will allow access via your VM IP address. If you still can't get on, check your logs and see what the error is (and post it here if it isn't obvious what the problem is).

You may then need to check that you have a reverse-DNS that resolves to a VM block. At that point you contact VM on their support forum and ask them to either fix your RDNS or have your IP added to the blocks recognised by the servers.
