Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Yep I agree with you I think.

Just curious if there was any lets say, ethernet routing advantage by moving to another router rather an using SH as the modem and router.

I'm not sure what you mean by "ethernet routing advantage". If you need things like jumbo frames, manual routing, high connection capacity, isolated virtual guest networks, custom DNS with caches, IPv6 support, logging etc. You won't get that stuff from a SH, so that's why you'd need a proper router.

I don't think the Tivo has wireless. That's why when you use one for watching TV on remote devices or remote programming/control via a tablet/phone app, the instructions are to use an ethernet cable to connect the Tivo and the Superhub together.

Boxes are long way apart, wondered if you could stick a USB wireless adaptor or something into the tivo box, powerline is probably the next simplest.

A virgin media engineer came today to install new fibre.
Installation cost £50.
The thing is, they did not put in any new cables what so ever! They used this old co axial cable which is over 10 years old. Even the phone line, the box was the same. They did not replace anything. They did not even supply a Ethernet cable with the router... Used an old cat5 one.
Then he spent few minutes outside doing something in green box and thats all.
Quite annoyed at all that. However, speed's are okay.

Virgin Media is only fibre optic to the green boxes on your estate, it's coaxial from the green box to peoples' homes. He'll have been connecting you up at the green box or optimising your power level.

What were you expecting? They would only put in new Coax cable in if there isn't a working one already there.

MMj has it spot on.

The reason I was annoyed was because I thought they would do more than that for £50.

They would have if they needed to. My first install, they pulled cable down the street, drilled holes, put cables around the house. The second time they moved some cables, let me pull some stuff under the floor boards and down conduits to hide it. The third time they came out, swapped my old STB for a Tivo, made a phone call and that was it. It always costs, not for the work done, but for them to come out and do it.

At least they don't charge for fault fixing or replacements if something breaks in the future, so it's swings and roundabouts.

Who else is having trouble with the superhub? Been having Wifi drop outs for the last week and random connection loss on the PC, have reset the router a few times and checked it's up to date.

No problems experienced as you describe. Have you checked VM maintenance page?

The new tiers are 100, 200 and 300 Mbps. All customers wanting to take the free upgrade will have to log into My Virgin Media and accept it there.

Just some word of advice to anyone who has gone past their 12 month contract. Know that you are in a powerful position in having the abilty to negotiate a much better contract via the threat of leaving them since your contract is over.

We were paying £36 a month for 50MB broadband and a 24/7 free land line calls phone line. After my 12 months contract finished I rang them up and selected the option to leave and told the nice lady on the other side that I wasnt happy paying £36 and want to leave. She straight away offered me £26 a month for the same service. I declined, she couldnt offer anything better so I gave her my 1 month notice to leave. A week later their external retentions rang me and offered me the same services for £20 a month which I negotiated down to £14.99 a month for a 12 month contract. I was well happy

i just got sky sports and movies and XLTV for an extra £3 a month with no contract obligation.

still definitely worth asking sky movies on demand is actually pretty good, has a much better selection of classic movies than netflix.

Just received an email from VM informing me of an increase to my broadband £1.75 pm.

"We want to let you know that from 1 November 2015, the amount you pay for your Virgin Media broadband service is going up by £1.75 a month. Rest assured, you're already with the fastest widely available, most reliable broadband provider in the UK, and our promise to keep offering this means we're about to boost our customers' speeds again."

Additional information:

"Our broadband is getting even faster.

From this autumn, we'll start to increase our customers' broadband speeds once again. We know that, on average, our customers used 50% more data last year than in the one before – tweeting around the clock, gaming for longer, and streaming even more box sets. And to make sure we keep up with this demand, we're upgrading our speeds. Our broadband's already up to twice as fast as Sky Fibre and BT Infinity and, thanks to our unique cable network powered by DOCSIS® 3 technology, we can keep making it faster (it's the magic in our cables). More details on our customer upgrades will be revealed in the coming weeks"

I do not mind the increase £ excellent broadband. Look forward to hearing what the increase upgrades will entail.
