Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Just ordered the Homeworks+ (traffic management is killing me). As stated £14 extra plus £10 'activation' for the SH3. I was originally told the upload is 20% of download (i.e. 60Mb) it obviously isn't so pushed them harder and was then told 10% (30Mb). Just very poor customer services but what I have come to experience from their out sourced service centres.

It is 20mb but there are rumours in the near future they are going to the 10% option, don't know how true it is! Also upload on 156 and 200mbs services at the moment is 12mbs. 12.7 on 200mb. It's all on the virgin STM page. No think it looks like 12mbs is the max now.

What are the correct settings for a cable router when using the Hub in modem mode?

Im swapping routers atm and It's not working when i set it up as Dynamic IP, It gets an address of 192.168.100.10, but no internet connection.

On the current router, an asus, i have it set up as PPPoe without a username and password, and it connects, but pulls through a WAN ip on the 84. range.

Anyone know how it should be connected?

What router? It should be dynamic IP, but it's easier to connect it up, power everything down, then switch on modem, router, and PC in that order. Otherwise you're trying to drop all the IPs and request new ones back in the right order.

Maybe the order just wasn't playing ball then, Current router is an Asus RT-N56U running a DD-WRT type firmware, and the new one is a D-Link DIR-868L which I will be installing DD-WRT on, was just testing it with the stock D-Link firmware.

Was getting an IP from the modem, just not connecting. I'll try booting them in that order, I think i normally do Router, Modem, I'll give it a try.

Cheers

Just got upgraded to 200mb from 162... or should I say downgraded, getting a constant 0.5mb down 12mb up on speedtests. Called VM to check their end, they told me it had to be my network (RT-N56U) so I had to put their superhub 2 back in router mode... and it died, they couldn't put new instructions on it and I couldn't access it from the web.

New one now posted out and no internet for the next 3 days.

Edit: Been rebooting the box every few minutes, it has internet again but again at 0.5/12. Will have to wait to see if the new box fixes this or if they magically find a solution overnight. Tethering I get 4mb (3g) so might keep the phone connected instead as it's faster.

If your area does up to 200mb then you should be able to get Homework+ 300Mb

sweet, thanks. I'm currently on the 50meg service (or rather, my friend who's living at my place is!) but planning to phone them up in the summer when i move back in to basically get the fastest i can...

If they do bump the Homeworks upstream to 30Mb and retain no traffic management, I think I'd probably go for that. Would make online backups a lot more viable

Does anyone know why Ookla speed test on my laptop always gives me low results around 20 to 30MB? It has shown me my true speed of 108MB before but not anymore.

Thinkbroadband gives me 108MB and I know that's my true speed because I've seen it with usenet downloads. And Ookla app on my phone also gives me 108MB, using the same local test server (Brentford) on both phone and laptop.

Plug lappy in by lan then test again :)

Switched from Sky ADSL to Virgin's 200mbps 'service' a few weeks ago. Badly regretting it now.

This is about normal between 6pm and 11pm.
